Thermal power engineering: requirements towards environment and sustainability

Sustainable supply of energy is of major importance for society and economy. The present energy demand is satisfied mainly by the conversion of fossil fuels. It is expected that the worldwide primary energy consumption will nearly double in the next 20 years, with an increased contribution of renewable energy sources. Recent increases of oil prices and the necessity to meet the Kyoto targets for CO2 reduction are additional driving forces for the development of sustainable energy conversion technologies in the future. The objective of the presentation is to discuss existing and developing energy conversion technologies and to give an outlook for the future. Aspects are the sustainability of energy supply, environmental friendliness of energy conversion and cost-competitiveness of production. Technologies under consideration are steam power plants, gas turbines and combined cycles, combined cycles for solid fuels, decentralized heat and power production including fuel cells and renewable energies like biomass.
