ASTRON ONTVANGT FL. 15 MILJOEN SUBSIDIE VOOR AMBITIEUS LOFAR-PROJECT
ASTRON in Dwingeloo ontvangt 15 miljoen gulden (6.9 miljoen Euro)
vestigingsvoorwaarden in Noord-Nederland.
spin-off effecten.
Bovendien
exploiteert ASTRON eigen waarneemfaciliteiten van wereldklasse zoals
de Synthese Radio Telescoop in Westerbork.

English Summary
Dwingeloo, April 26 2001
ASTRON in Dwingeloo is to receive a subsidy of 15 million guilders
(6.9 Million Euro) from KOMPAS-funds for the second phase of the
LOFAR project . (The KOMPAS funds are intended to strengthen the
economic climate in the three northernmost provinces in the
Netherlands) The news of this award was announced today by the SNN
(Samenwerkingsverband Noord Nederland - an association of the
provinces of Groningen, Fryslân and Drenthe). With LOFAR ASTRON is
pursuing its goal of designing a completely new type of radio
telescope, which is based on phased array technology and uses an
innovative network design.
LOFAR (for Low Frequency Array) is to be the first in a new generation
of software radio-telescopes. The instrument will be the first to
allow the entire low frequency region of the radio spectrum (from 10
to 250 MHz, around the FM band) to be used for scientific research
purposes. In addition, LOFAR is a pilot for the international research
and development programme into the technical feasibility of an entire
new generation of radiotelescopes, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA).
The technology to be used in LOFAR includes novel network techniques
and has a high degree of innovation. Collaboration with industries in
the region, throughout the Netherlands and further afield are an
important factor in this respect.
