INTERNATIONAL JAZZCLUB - CARNAVAL DU JAZZ - PROUDLY PRESENTS:

Mo 7th of May 2001 * Only NL Concert * THEAK-TET (AUS) Dfl. 30,--

David Theak - tenor sax, James Muller - guitar, Phil Stack - double bass, Craig Simon - drums

Rechtsreeks uit Sydney! Een van de meest beloftevolle formaties. Het Australisch kwartet Theak-Tet bestaat sinds '97, speelt veelal originele nieuwe jazzcomposities van hun leider David Theak. Harmonisch, inventief en krachtig fraai. Theak-tet was vorig jaar nog genomineerd als Australian Jazz Group of the Year.
Theak-tet was founded in 1997 to provide a platform for original jazz compositions. They believe that the synergy achieved by working together as a group allows a freedom and communication not often possible with thrown together groups. The group plays original, harmonically inventive, melodic compositions that provide a platform for flowing improvisations. Nominated for Australian Jazz Group of the Year in 2000. Theak-tet released in 1999 it's first CD. Theak-et is on tour in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland (we're the only stage!) and Belgium. They are planning to record their second album in Germany. Reviewer John Shand wrote in Sydney Morning Herald - December 13, 2000: "Saxophonist Dave Theak's powerhouse quintet was a worthy foil. Their form of vitality requires less qualification, being of the sort to physically electrify the room from time to time..." James Muller (guitar - age 25) Winner 2000 National Jazz Awards, ARIA award for best Australian Jazz Album is one of the most prominent jazz musicians on Australia at this time. As a regular member of the Vince Jones Band and as a featured soloist in the internationally acclaimed Chad Wackerman Group. "Dust Mite contained a solo from guitarist James Muller which shredded the listener's expectations and knitted them back together in ways that could only be met with a disbelieving shake of the head. In terms of both melodic conception and sound, Muller is as good an electric guitarist as I know of. Period." Live review - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald.
Phil Stack (double bass - age 23) is one of Sydney's most exciting and in demand bass players. Winner of the 97 James Morrison Scholarship, some of Phil's performance highlights include working with Dale Barlow, James Morrison, Emma Pask, Sandy Evans and Gai Bryant. Craig Simon (drums) is the blazing new drum talent on the Sydney Scene. Winner of the National Drum Play-off 2000, Craig Simon has worked with Dale Barlow, James Muller, Mike Nock, Bob Sheppard (USA) and has performed at most of Australia's premier venues and festivals. David Theak (tenor sax / composer / bandleader - age 29) is theaktet's founder and primary composer. David has played and recorded with the cream of Sydney's jazz community including Steve Hunter's Nine Lives, Cathy Harley, James Muller, Chuck Yates, Robyne Dunn, and Gordon Brisker. "Theak is a potent tenor saxophonist for whom rhythmic drive and energy are high on the agenda." Live review - Sydney Morning Herald
