Dit weekend is een nieuwe variant van de Code Red worm ontdekt, de zogenaamde Code Red Trojan. De worm installeert ook een 'backdoor Trojan' op de geïnfecteerde machine. Dit is een programma dat een hacker volledige toegang en controle geeft over de geïnfecteerde machine. Daarnaast werkt deze worm sneller en zal hij zich waarschijnlijk sterker verspreiden dan de eerste versie.
De worm vormt een risico voor bedrijven die gebruik maken van ISS servers die nog niet ge-update zijn met de patch van Microsoft. McAfee biedt als eerste anti-virusbedrijf opsporing en verwijdering van deze Code Red Trojan.

McAfee Closes Back Door on New Code Red Variant
McAfee's Advanced Anti-Virus Scanning Technology Detects and Removes Code Red "Back Door" on Infected Systems
SANTA CLARA, Calif., August 6, 2001 - McAfee, a division of Network Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: NETA), today announced detection and removal of the "back door" Trojan that infects servers vulnerable to the recently discovered Code Red variant. McAfee anti-virus products (www.mcafeeb2b.com) are able to detect and remove the "back door" Trojan that is transported by the Code Red variant.
"We see a need to make customers aware of the need to update their anti-virus software as well as deleting the Trojan, which opens a potentially dangerous 'back door' to your system," said Michael Callahan, director of product marketing for McAfee. Working around the clock, researchers at McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team) have quickly developed the necessary virus definition updates that detect and remove the "back door." This includes the removal of the primary associated registry changes, ensuring that the "back door" cannot be used and the machine is no longer vulnerable to the Code Red Trojan.
