ENGLISH -> Toon Roos is well-known in the Netherlands and throughout Europe for the past 15, almost 20 years. This excellent saxophonist is representative of the 'post-Wayne Shorter generation'. Fluidity, sensuality and generosity are his main leitmotivs. The saxophonist and composer Toon Roos won the Bird Award 2001 for the 'Artist Deserving Wider Recognition' at the North Sea Jazz Festival. The public chose Toon Roos from ten nominees. He got almost five times more public votes than the number two. The lyricism in his playing was especially praised. The jury wrote: 'Toon Roos belongs to the best tenor sax players of the Netherlands. He's multi-faceted, plays in the most diverse ensembles, and when it comes to command of the sax, he stands out from all the rest. There is an enormous expressiveness in his performance. His instantly recognisable sound on the tenor sax is round and flexible. Toon Roos disposes of great harmonious insight, fluent melody and robust timing. Although his roots are traditional, Toon Roos is part of the modern generation of jazz musicians who know no stylistic borders, and with that is a worthy exponent of the current state of affairs in jazz music.'
So he plays semi-acoustic jazz with an emphasis on the standards, and additional compositions of himself. For a few years now Toon plays with the Belgian pianist Ivan Paduart. The repertoire of this acoustic jazz quartet consists of original compositions by Ivan Paduart and Toon. Their songs match in taste, style and groove and all have a lyrical quality. The group has toured The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and China. The other players in this quartet are the Dutch double bass virtuoso Stefan Lievestro and the Belgian drummer Mimi Verderame. Occasionally the group has Dutch singer Fay Claassen as special guest. Ivan Paduart has played and recorded with musicians such as Toots Thielemans, Philippe Catherine, Bob Malach and Rick Margitza. Toon Roos also teaches at the conservatories of Maastricht, Utrecht and The Hague. Toon (1964) started his international career with his performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1984, after which an extensive tour followed immediately. In the same year he received the Wessel Ilcken Prize. Over the years his own Quartet has released several cd's and in addition Toon recorded with other bands such as the Dutch Jazz Orchestra and the Netherlands Metropole Orchestra. He performed with various established musicians, and in many European countries, the United States, Mexico and China. Toon Roos has played with: Toots Thielemans, Kenny Werner, Vince Mendoza, John Clayton, Jack Macduff, Art Blakey, George Mraz, Hein van de Gein, Enrico Pieranunzi, Philippe Catherine, Bob Brookmeyer, Charlie Byrd and Dr. John.
