UITNODIGING lezing over Islam en/in Europa na 11 september: culturele diversiteit als sleutel voor overleving.

In het kader van het culturele programma "de Nachten van de Ramadan" nodigen de Federatie van Marokkaanse Verenigingen en het Cultureel Centrum Berchem i.s.m. Moussem Antwerpen, Wereldwijd en Masereelfonds de Prof. Mahdi Elmandjra uit voor een lezing over:

Islam en/in Europa na 11 september: culturele diversiteit als sleutel voor overleving.

Zaterdag 8 december 2001 om 20.30 in het Cultureel Centrum van Berchem Driekoningenstraat 126, 2600 Berhem.

Mahdi Elmandjra is een vooraanstaande hedendaagse Marokkaanse denker die grote wereldfaam geniet. In 1970 sprak hij, voor de eerste keer voor de Groep van Rome over botsing van beschavingen. In 1991 publiceerde hij naar aanleiding van de 2de golfoorlog " Première Guerre Civilisationnelle" waar hij deze oorlog als botsing tussen Noord en Zuid beschrijft. Zijn stelling is dat de kolonisaties economische oorlogen waren en dat de huidige conflicten een cultureel karakter hebben. Hij sprak dus over botsing tussen beschavingen vóór Samuel Huntington maar in tegenstelling tot deze laatste, vindt hij dat oorlogen niet onvermijdelijk zijn. Hij beschouwt culturele diversiteit als middel bij uitstek voor het voorkomen van botsingen en als sleutel voor de overleving van de menselijke soort in het tijdperk van de globalisatie. Hij minimaliseert ook de impact van de drie "gevaren" die bepalend zijn voor de strategie in relatie met de rest van de wereld: de demografische bom, de Aziatische bom (China en Japan) en de islamitische bom. Hij klaagt de westerse dominantie aan en stelt dat modernisatie geen synoniem is van verwestering. Het Japanse model is daar, volgens hem een levend voorbeeld van. Hij beschouwt de huidige mondiale orde en de Amerikaanse dominantie als tijdelijk van aard en als fase in de opbouw van een cultureel diverse wereld.

Wij zijn er van overtuigd dat Prof. Mahdi Elmandjra een substantieel bijdrage kan leveren aan het brandend actueel debat over de verhoudingen tussen beschavingen en culturen in het algemeen en tussen Europa en de islam in het bijzonder. U bent van harte welkom.

Summary biography Mahdi Elmandjra

Professor Mahdi Elmandjra graduated from Cornell (USA) and obtained his Ph.D. (econ.) from the London School of Economics. He teaches international relations at the University of Rabat since 1958. He was Director General of the Moroccan Broadcasting Service and Counselor of the Moroccan Mission to the UN. He occupied various functions in the UN System (1961 to 1981) including that of Assistant Director General of UNESCO for Social Sciences, Human Sciences and Culture and of Coordinator of the Conference on Technical Cooperation between Developing countries (UNDP).

He was President of the World Future Studies Federation and of Futuribles International (Paris) as well as the Founding President of the Moroccan Association of Future Studies and the Moroccan Organization of Human Rights. He is a member of the African Academy of Sciences and of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco. He has been a Visiting Professor to Tokyo University (1998) and a Visiting Scholar of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) at the Tokyo Keizai University (1999).

M. Elmandjra has published over 400 articles in the fields of the human and social sciences. He is a co-author of "No Limits to Learning" (Report to the Club of Rome, 1979) and the author of several books including "The United Nations System" (1973), "Maghreb et Francophonie" (1988), "Premiere Guerre Civilisationnelle" (1991), "Retrospective des Futurs" (1992), "Nord-Sud, Prelude a l'Ere Postcoloniale" 1993), «Cultural Diversity Key to Survival» (1995), «Dialogue about Communication» (1996), «Decolonisation Culturelle : Defi majeur du 21e Siecle» (1996).

Professor Elmandjra received the Prix de la Vie Economique 1981 (France), the Grand Medal of the French Academy of Architecture (1984), the distinctions of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters (France, 1985) and of the Order of The Rising Sun (Japan, 1986). He also received the Peace Medal of the Albert Einstein International Academy and the Award of the World Future Studies Federation (WFSF) in 1995. He has been selected by the International Biographical Center (Cambridge, UK) as one of the "2000 Outstanding Scholars of the 20th Century" to be published in mid 2000.
