MALEISISCHE POLITIEKE GEVANGENEN OOK GESTOPT MET
DRINKEN
VOORMALIG VICE-PREMIER ANWAR IBRAHIM OOK IN
HONGERSTAKING
Sinds woensdag 10 april zijn in Maleisie zes leden van de politieke
oppositie in hongerstaking uit protest tegen hun arrestatie een jaar
geleden op grond van de Internal Security Act (ISA). Op grond van
deze wet kunnen mensen voor onbeperkte tijd worden
vastgehouden zonder enige vorm van proces. Afgelopen zondag
hebben de activisten besloten ook niet langer te drinken, waardoor
hun situatie snel verslechterd. Inmiddels heeft ook de voormalige
vice-premier van Maleisie, Anwar Ibrahim, zich bij de hongerstakers
aangesloten. Anwar is enkele jaren geleden in een politiek
schijnproces veroordeeld tot 15 jaar cel voor machtsmisbruik en
sodomie.
Vorige week woensdag hielden zo'n 20 actievoerders een picketline
bij Malaysian Airlines, een bedrijf waar de Maleisische regering een
controlerend financieel belang in heeft. Gedurende een uur hing er
een spandoek aan het kantoor en werden op straat pamfletten
uitgedeeld.
Nu de situatie in Maleisie verder escaleert zal er as. donderdag
opnieuw een picket worden gehouden bij het kantoor van Malaysian
Airways, waarbij we de druk verder op willen voeren en hen willen
aanzetten tot actie richting de Maleisische regering. Een uur later
zal in Den Haag een picket plaatsvinden voor de Maleisische
Ambassade. Bij beide acties zullen leden van een Maleisische
delegatie van mensenrechtenorganisaties die deze week Nederland
bezoeken, aanwezig zijn. De eisen van beide acties zijn:

VRIJLATING VAN ALLE POLITIEKE GEVANGEN IN MALEISIË !
INTREKKING VAN DE INTERNAL SECURITY ACT !

MALAYSIAN HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANISATIONS VISIT THE
NETHERLANDS WHILE HUNGER STRIKE BEGINS
From 15-19 April 2002, a delegation of Malaysian human rights
organisations is scheduled to tour the Netherlands as part of a
campaign to abolish Malaysia's Internal Security Act (ISA) and to
draw international attention to the continuing abuse of human
rights. Among those coming to visit the Netherlands, are
Coordinator of a regional women's rights organisation Mable Au,
student leader and ex-detainee Khairul Anur, and SUARAM
representative Yap Swee Yeng. SUARAM -Voice of the Malaysian
people- is a prominent human rights and development network in
Malaysia and active in the struggle against the ISA.
Inherited from the British colonial period, the ISA allows for citizens
to be detained and imprisoned without trial and be held
incommunicado for sixty days. Since 11 September and the "war
gainst terrorism", the ISA has been used to repress the large
Muslim population and to curtail their opposition to the current
regime. The federal government hopes to hinder young Muslims
from being able to vote for the first time in the upcoming elections
and stop them from supporting opposition parties like PAS and
Keadlian Justice Party.
One of the opposition leaders, Tian Chua, and Vice-President of
the Keadlian Justice Party, was a student of the Institute of Social
Studies in Den Haag during the early 1990s. Tian was arrested
after participating in solidarity activies with the well-known
opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who in 1999 was sentenced to
nine years imprisonment.
On 10 April, six Kamunting detention camp detainees held under
the Internal Security Act have launched a hunger strike in protest of
their continued incarceration without trial. The six are: Parti
Keadilan Nasdional Youth chief Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor, Vice-
president Chua Tian Chang, party Johor Youth chief Lokman Noor
Adam, former Jemaah Islamiah Malaysia president Shaari Sungip,
activist Hishamuddin Rais, former lecturer Dr Badrul Amin Baharom.
In a related initiative, the Abolish ISA Movement (AIM) submitted a
memorandum to the National Human Rights Commission
demanding the release of the six and other ISA detainees using
any and all means within its powers; that an inquiry be conducted
into the detention of the six under the ISA and permission to visit
those who are on hunger strike in the Kamunting Detention Camp.
The memorandum was endorsed by 82 non-governmental
organisations, political parties, trade unions, consumer
organisations and community groups. Activities of international
support for the hunger strike and the release of the ISA-6 have also
taken place today in six cities around the world.
The Malaysian human rights delegation tour was made possible by
the Malaysia Work Group, a solidarity network sponsored by
