Debat: Het filetijdperk definitief afgesloten?
Op 26 maart 2003 heeft de Club of Amsterdam een debat met als onderwerp de toekomst van de mobiliteit. Twee sprekers zullen beschrijven welke ontwikkelingen er nu spelen rond mobiliteit en welke ontwikkelingen er verwacht worden in de toekomst. De challengers zullen de sprekers en het publiek vervolgens uitdagen om met elkaar in discussie te gaan.
De twee inleiders van de discussie zijn André Hammer, algemeen directeur van Connekt en Wim Korver, hoofd van de afdeling Traffic & Transport van TNO Inro (Infrastructuur, Transport en Regionale Ontwikkeling).
André Hammer zal de moderne maatschappij en haar grote problemen rondom mobiliteit en toegankelijkheid beschrijven. Vooral in grote steden groeien deze problemen dramatisch. Mensen willen steeds mobieler zijn, wat ook nog eens belangrijk is voor de huidige economie. Onze leefomgeving moet daarentegen ook beschermd worden. Dit dilemma dwingt ons om fundamentele, intelligente keuzes te maken. Vooral met het oog op grote steden, want hoe behouden we enerzijds de economische en culturele functies en houden we anderzijds op hetzelfde moment de leefomgeving aantrekkelijk.
Het onderwerp is niet langer een exclusief publieke of private verantwoordelijkheid. Een structurele oplossing, een verandering richting duurzame mobiliteit, moet gevonden worden in een samenwerking tussen publieke en private partijen, met de hulp van research instituten en natuurlijk de (auto)mobilisten.
Wim Korver zal ingaan op nieuwe innovatieve transport concepten. Volgens hem is het niet moeilijk om een aantal uitvindingen op te noemen die claimen dat ze bestaande of komende problemen rond mobiliteit op kunnen lossen. Voorbeelden zijn de Transrapid, verschillende soorten people mover systems en ondergrondse vervoerssystemen. Al deze ideeën hebben echter één ding gemeenschappelijk: ze zijn gebaseerd op een specifieke technologische innovatie. Maar wat precies de bijdrage is aan het oplossen van het transport probleem is onduidelijk. De analyse van wie voor het nieuwe systeem moet betalen en wat precies de voordelen zijn voor de gebruikers wordt vaak achteraf gedaan. Om het innovatieproces meer effectief te maken moet de gebruiker zo snel mogelijk in het innovatieproces betrokken raken.
In zijn presentatie zal Wim Korver voorbeelden geven van succesvolle en niet-succesvolle transport innovaties. Daarnaast zal hij vanuit een theorie verduidelijken hoe innovatieprocessen in vervoerssystemen werken. Deze theorie is gebaseerd op een historische analyse en zal gebruikt worden om ontwikkelingen en scenario's voor de toekomst te voorspellen.
Het discussieforum wordt gevormd door de beide inleiders, André Hammer en Wim Korver aangevuld met de challengers Frederik Johannes Abbink (Technisch Directeur van the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR), Ronald Mallant (ECN) en Luud Schimmelpennink. Discussieleider is J.P.Thomas Thijssen, CEO van Hamilton International.

André Hammer - keynotes
General Director, Connekt
Since September 2001, André G.J.M. Hammer M.Sc. (1951) is general director of Connekt, the innovation network for traffic and transport. Connekt, a public private foundation in which ministries, industry, branch organisations and knowledge institutes participate, is charged with the duty of stimulating the development and transfer of knowledge in the sphere of traffic and transport, thus contributing to the indispensable innovation in this field.
>From 1996 to the beginning of 2001, Hammer was general director of move GmbH, an organisation responsible for the set-up and execution of a very innovative, co-operative traffic management around the World Exhibition Expo 2000 in Hannover.
Previous to that, he worked at management level in the field of strategy development for public transport companies and directed various projects in Eastern Europe. Hammer has been active in international organisations for a long time. André Hammer studied mechanical engineering, information science and traffic management.

Wim Korver - keynotes
Wim Korver is head of the Department of Traffic & Transport (24 employees) and member of the management team of the institute TNO Inro (Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development) of Applied Scientific Research TNO in Delft. He is also a transport consultant in the field with more than 12 years experience. His experience has a broad spectrum within the transport field. He specialises in the relationship between technology and transport policy, mode choice and evaluation studies of transport policy measures. He is an expert in international technology watch studies, especially in "translating" technology development into relevant technology bundles for the transportation sector. He is adept at demand assessment studies of new integrated transport systems and has a broad knowledge of different kind of methods to assess demand for (new) transport concepts/systems.

Ronald K.A.M. Mallant - panelist
Programme Manager Fuel Cells, Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN)
born in Singapore, 1953. Studied Geophysics at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Initiated the Solid Polymer Fuel Cell R&D activities at ECN in 1990.
In close collaboration with industrial partners, ECN Fuel Cell Technology develops materials, components, stacks and system components for stationary and automotive applications of fuel cells. Fuel cells constitute an efficient zero-emission energy conversion technology suitable for both in the current fossil fuel based energy system, as well as in a future hydrogen energy system based on renewable energy sources.

Thomas Thijssen is Managing Director of Hamilton International. A company focused on supporting Business and Governments in process of innovation, learning and entrepreneurship.
EMIM stands for Executive Master in Information Management, a Master degree from the University of Amsterdam. Thijssen also holds a degree in Marketing.
The first 25 years of his career Thijssen fulfilled all relevant positions in the international hospitality industry, working in Australia, England, United States and the Netherlands. For Holiday Inns he was a Food & Beverage Manager and General Manager. In the Netherlands Thijssen was Commercial Director on group level for Postiljon Hotels (currently Mercure).
Since 1998 as Managing Director of Hamilton International, Thijssen worked in the fields of international tourism & hospitality, the health sector and in the field of education. His focus is entrepreneurship and innovation.
He is an author of 3 books and a series of articles on innovation, demand driven design and education and other topics concerning entrepreneurship. As a speaker he was invited at several conferences in places like Hong Kong, Los Angeles (US), Nice (France), Guadalajara (Mexico), Bergen (Norway), Trinidad & Tobago (West Indies) and Seoul (South Korea).
His main aim is to help people grow and to create value, both for themselves, their closest relations and the business they work for.
