SVMV vraagt Bush om hulp
VALKENBURG - De Stichting Vrienden Marinevliegkamp Valkenburg (SVMV) heeft de Amerikaanse President George W. Bush in een brief om hulp gevraagd ter ondersteuning van haar pogingen om de P-3C Orions van de Marineluchtvaartdienst te behouden.
Op 3 september brengen Minister President Balkenende en Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken De Hoop Scheffer een bezoek aan de Amerikaanse president. Dit bezoek staat in het teken van de Nederlandse politieke steun aan de oorlog in Irak. In haar brief aan Bush legt het SVMV-bestuur uit dat de Nederlandse regering voornemens is om de P-3C Orion patrouillevliegtuigen per 1 januari 2004 aan de grond te houden. Vele malen zijn de Nederlandse Orions ingezet voor internationale crisisbeheersingsoperaties en regelmatig gebeurde dat op verzoek van de Amerikaanse regering.
Het SVMV-bestuur vraagt de Amerikaanse president om Balkenende en De Hoop Scheffer te vragen de plannen te herzien of hen minstens zijn zorg over deze bezuinigingsmaatregel over te brengen. De SVMV benadrukt dat afschaffing van de Nederlandse Orion-vloot een maatregel is die zeer nadelig is voor onze veiligheid. De vliegtuigen leveren immers een belangrijke bijdrage aan de strijd tegen terrorisme en drugs.

Mr President,
Lockheed P-3C Orion Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft of the Royal Netherlands Navy have been supporting many international operations, like Sharp Guard (1993 - 1996), Eagle Eye and Allied Force (1999), missions in support of SFOR and KFOR and most recently Operation Enduring Freedom.
In support of Operation Enduring Freedom the Dutch Orions conducted backfill operations to relieve USN P-3C squadrons in the Caribbean, on request of the US Government. Also one of the Dutch P-3C aircraft was deployed to the United Arab Emirates to fly patrol and reconnaissance missions around and over Afghanistan.
With this letter we would like to draw your attention to the plans of the Dutch government to disband the Maritime Patrol Group of the Royal Netherlands Navy and to retire the P-3C Orion fleet on 1st January 2004. Earlier plans foresaw in the modernization of the P-3C fleet up to a level that was quite similar to the USN P-3C AIP Orions.
If the Dutch parliament ratifies the plans of our government later this year, these P-3C Orions, as well as the valuable high level of experience of the Dutch P-3C crews (much praised by their USN colleagues), will no longer be available for any international operations.
On September 3rd our Prime Minister, Mr Balkenende, and our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr De Hoop Scheffer, will visit you. We should appreciate it if you would ask them to reconsider their plans, or at least express your concern about their plans. In our opinion retiring the Dutch P-3C fleet makes no sense. These aircraft are too valuable in the operations against terrorism and drugs!
We represent a group of citizens who are convinced that the disposal of this very useful military asset would be a huge mistake. We hope you will share our worries and that you will try to convince Mr Balkenende and Mr De Hoop Scheffer that the P-3C Orions should be kept on strength.
