( BW)(CA-REASONING) Reasoning Joins Sustainable Computing Consortium;
Company Unites with Major Corporations in Pressing for Improved
Software Reliability and Quality

    Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 2003--Reasoning,
the leading provider of automated software inspection (ASI) services,
today announced that it has joined the Sustainable Computing
Consortium (SCC), an organization aimed at protecting the nation's
computing infrastructure and improving the reliability of its
information technology systems.
Based out of Carnegie Mellon University, the SCC is composed of a
group of major corporate information technology users, software
developers, suppliers, academic leaders and government agencies that
have teamed up to improve information technology quality,
dependability and security. Central to its mission, the SCC plans to:

-- foster the development of standards and methodologies to
        reduce software defects;

-- quantify and reduce the risks software flaws pose to the
        nation's computing infrastructure; and

-- conduct independent research, provide measurement and design
tools, and document best practices to quantify and improve
        software quality, dependability and security.

Dr. William Guttman, director of the SCC, stated, "We are
delighted to have Reasoning team up with other leading global
businesses, software developers and government agencies that each
share a profound sensitivity to issues of software reliability.
Reasoning brings a unique perspective to the SCC in dealing with
software defects on a functional, real-world level. We look forward to
Reasoning's active participation in the Consortium."
"Our joining the SCC underscores Reasoning's commitment to helping
our customers improve the reliability of their software applications
through early defect detection and elimination. Reasoning shares a
common vision with the SCC's focus on software quality. We look
forward to collaborating with the Consortium, contributing ideas to
the SCC's planned research, and making a positive impact to the
industry as a whole," said Bill Payne, Reasoning's President and CEO.
According to Gartner, a software defect left unfixed until late in
the development cycle costs 80 to 1,000 times more to fix than it
would if it was dealt with earlier. By incorporating ASI early in the
software development cycle and at critical intervals in the
development process, companies can significantly cut the cost of
finding defects, reduce downtime, and improve overall software
quality.
Other members of the Sustainable Computing Consortium include:
AIG, Alcoa, Caterpillar, Cisco, CMP Media LLC, Confluence, FedEx
Corporate Services, Inc., General Motors, KeyBank, Mellon Financial
Corp., Merck, Microsoft, NASA, Oracle, Pfizer, Raytheon, Reed Smith,
Tata Consultancy Services, UPMC Health System.
