Clinton realiseert drastische prijsverlaging aidsremmers

Het Aids Fonds en PharmAccess International delen mee dat ex-president
Clinton vandaag in een persconferentie een belangrijke doorbraak
aangekondigd heeft in de strijd om de prijs van aidsremmers te
verlagen. Gezien de omvang van haar behandel programma's is het de
Cinton Foundation gelukt om de prijs van generieke antiretrovirale
middelen te halveren tot vanaf 140 $ per jaar*. Zie de aankondiging

Tomorrow, President Clinton will announce that the Foundation has
reached an agreement with Cipla, Ranbaxy, and Aspen Pharmacare to
significantly reduce the price of ARVs. We have also signed an
agreement with Matrix laboratories to provide the active
pharmaceutical ingredient to these formulators at a reduced price. As
an example, under the Clinton contract, the price of the d4T, 3TC, NVP
fixed dose pill will drop from approximately $300 to less then $140
per person per year and the AZT, 3TC, NVP fixed dose pill will drop
from approximately $418 to less than $240 per person per year. The way
the deal is structured provides for additional price reductions as
volumes increase.
You will be able to purchase ARVs directly from the manufacturers at
the new Clinton Foundation prices. We will send a sheet with detailed
pricing and a description of how this will work sometime early next
week. We will officially announce the agreement tomorrow, October 23.

De Clinton Foundation heeft zich ten doel gesteld grootschalige
AIDS-behandel programma's te organiseren in Zuid Afrika, Tanzania,
Rwanda en Mozambique. In deze landen moet tussen nu en 5 jaar iedereen
die behandeling nodig heeft toegang tot behandeling krijgen. Voor
Tanzania komt dit neer op 400.000 mensen. Op dit moment wordt hooguit
1% van de AIDS patiënten in deze landen behandeld.
PharmAccess International is een partner van de Clinton Foundation en
betrokken bij de implementatie van het programma in Tanzania en
Zuid-Afrika. Pharmaccess International is een Nederlandse stichting,
in 2003 opgericht door prof. Joep Lange, verbonden aan het AMC.
PhamAccess International wordt financieel gesteund door het Aids
Fonds.
In samenwerking met o.a. Heineken, Coca-Cola en het Ministerie van
Buitenlandse zaken voert PharmAccess International AIDS
behandelprogramma's uit in 12 Afrikaanse landen. Op grond van de
expertise die daarmee opgedaan is, is PharmAccess, als enige
niet-Amerikaanse organisatie**, gevraagd om mee te helpen om de mega
plannen van de Clinton Foundation ten uitvoer te brengen.
