Evert Willem Beth Lezing (E.W. Beth Lecture) 2003 door Jean Bricmont.
Jean Bricmont is hoogleraar theoretische natuurkunde aan de Université
de Louvain. Zijn specialisme behoort tot de statistische fysica, in
het bijzonder het gebied van de renormalisatiegroep en stochastische
differentiaalvergelijkingen. Voor een breder publiek is hij vooral
bekend geworden als auteur (samen met Alan Sokal) van het boek
Impostures Intellectuelles (1997). Dit boek stelt het oeuvre van een
aantal postmoderne filosofen aan de kaak en ontmaskert hun gebruik van
pseudo-wetenschappelijke argumenten. Impostures Intellectuelles
ontketende een storm van debat en is in vele talen uitgegeven (o.a. in
het Nederlands als Intellectueel bedrog, Epo/De Geus, 1999).
Bricmont heeft zich sindsdien regelmatig in artikelen, lezingen en
interviews uitgesproken in de publieke discussie over wetenschap,
cultuur, politiek en religie. Karakteristiek voor zijn visie is steeds
de verdediging van rationaliteit en de erkenning van objectieve,
cultuuronafhankelijke waarheden als de beste remedie tegen de
kortzichtigheid van culturele vooroordelen.
Samenvatting: After some general remarks on the notion of
'determinism', I will discuss the precise meaning of chaos theory and
the frequent misunderstandings concerning the implications of that
theory. After reviewing the status of probabilistic reasoning in
classical physics, I will also briefly discuss misunderstandings
occurring in the context of quantum mechanics.
