CONGRES
DE ISLAM EN DE TOEKOMST VAN EUROPA
Amerikaanse en Europese politici en intellectuelen touren door Rotterdam en beleggen tweedags congres over de Islam, integratie, democratie, de demografische ontwikkelingen in Europa en de Turkse toetreding tot de Europese Unie.
In samenwerking met The New Atlantic Initiative van het American Enterprise Institute (Washington, DC), belegt de Edmund Burke Stichting op vrijdag 20 en zaterdag 21 mei een tweedaags congres over 'De Islam en de toekomst van Europa'.
Een groep van vijftien vooraanstaande Amerikaanse politici, journalisten en intellectuelen komt naar Nederland om met gesprekspartners uit Nederland en andere Europese landen kennis en ervaringen uit te wisselen.
Het programma begint op vrijdag 20 mei met een bezoek aan Rotterdam. Wethouder Marco Pastors zal de groep om 2 uur 's middags ontvangen in de B&W-zaal van het Rotterdamse stadhuis, en een presentatie geven over het Rotterdamse project van publieke debatten tussen Rotterdamse moslims en niet-moslims. Daarna brengt de groep een bezoek aan de Mevlana-moskee om met plaatselijke moslimleiders van gedachten te wisselen. Na een tour door de stad zal de groep zich vanaf 's middags 5 uur in het Rotterdamse Hilton hotel aansluiten bij een conferentie die door het 'projectbureau sociale integratie' wordt georganiseerd.

Om zes uur 's avonds beleggen wij in het Hilton hotel een persconferentie. U bent hierbij allen van harte uitgenodigd deze persconferentie bij te wonen. Individuele deelnemers zijn eventueel ook beschikbaar voor interviews.

De conferentie gaat de volgende dag, zaterdag 21 mei, verder op landgoed De Vanenburg (bij Amersfoort). In een besloten setting zullen de Amerikaanse en Europese deelnemers met elkaar discussiëren over 'de integratie van moslims in Europa en in de Verenigde Staten', over 'de verzoenbaarheid van islam en democratie', over 'Turkije en de Europese Unie', en over 'de demografische ontwikkelingen in Europa'.
