Europe's high-tech SMEs recently launched a ground swell of discussions with members of the European Parliament on the potentially negative implications for innovation, jobs and growth prospects should Europe vote to remove their ability to protect their innovations. The morning's events culminated in a balloon launch symbolising the risks of allowing European Innovation to float away.

Daniel Doll-Steinberg, CEO of British based software publishing company Tribeka said today was an excellent opportunity for small and medium sized companies to demonstrate to MEPs the importance of patents to the high technology industry in Europe.

'Over 250 of us gathered in Brussels to appeal to MEPs to support the Common Position and the irreparable damage that will be caused by eliminating these patents in Europe.'

A recent academic research paper published by the Business Software Alliance has shed further light on the role of SMEs in the CII Directive debate, highlighting that one in five CII patents filed at the European Patent Office relates to SMEs.
