55th Meeting of Nobel Laureates Opens in Lindau

LINDAU, Germany, June 27/PRNewswire/ --

- State Minister Goppel Welcomes 'Olympus of World-Wide Research'

Count Björn Bernadotte welcomed the 44 Nobel Laureates of Chemistry, Physics and Medicine/Physiology and over 700 scientists of tomorrow from 54 countries. The Bavarian State Minister for Science, Research and Art, Dr. Thomas Goppel, described the Meeting of Nobel Laureates as an 'Olympus of world-wide research.' The vision of its founder, Count Lennart Bernadotte, to develop the Lindau forum into a 'window to the world' has been realised.

The alumni database and the lectures given by the Nobel Laureates, which can also be followed at www.lindau-nobel.de, promote intercultural dialog. The Meeting allows Europe as a site of research and science to present itself as a powerful partner to the global scientific community. According to Prof. Frieder Meyer-Krahmer, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), 'the Meeting is an extremely important source of impetus, with focal messages being sent out from Lindau.' The Meetings of

Nobel Laureates stand for 'science made in Germany' and are European ambassadors vis-à-vis Asia and the USA.

Responsible for assuring the financial security of the Meetings are the Committee and the Foundation of the Meetings of Nobel Laureates in Lindau. Their goal, said Count Björn Bernadotte, is 'to cover half of the costs with contributions from private patrons and industry, with a quarter coming respectively from European and German public funds.'

In addition to the European Commission, the BMBF, the State of Bavaria and the International Lake Constance Conference (IBK), present partners of the Meeting include the Deutsche Telekom Foundation, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, BMW, Hewlett-Packard, Dr.-Ing. h.c. Ferdinand Porsche AG, Novartis, the Federation of the Bavarian Metal and Electronics Industry, the Federation of the Bavarian Chemical Industry, Südwestmetall Baden-Württemberg, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Robert Bosch Foundation, Audi, SAP and Siemens.
