Nederlandse en Amerikaanse wetenschappers verkennen toekomst vakgebied
Genen en milieu: gouden toekomst of doodgeboren kind?
Nu de genetische kaart van tal van planten, dieren en de mens weinig geheimen meer biedt, is de volgende stap hoe deze genen het functioneren van planten en dieren in hun natuurlijke omgeving bepalen en beïnvloeden. Anders gezegd: welke omgevingsfactoren zorgen ervoor dat bepaalde genen 'aan-' of 'uitgezet' worden, dus in de plant tot uitdrukking komen, met als gevolg dat twee planten met hetzelfde genoom in een verschillend milieu heel anders kunnen uitgroeien en tot wasdom komen. Over de vraag wat genen en milieu elkaar te bieden hebben, spreekt een gezelschap van Nederlandse en Amerikaanse wetenschappers in de internationale workshop Eco-genomics, van vrijdag 29 september tot en met zondag 1 oktober in Studiecentrum Soeterbeeck te Ravenstein. Is er sprake van een gouden toekomst voor dit vakgebied, of zijn de verwachtingen (veel) te hoog gespannen?
Deze workshop wordt georganiseerd door de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, de Universiteit Wageningen en Kansas State University, en ondersteund door NWO. Nederlandse toponderzoekers zullen hun licht laten schijnen over de toekomst van het eco-genomics gebied. Een geselecteerd gezelschap Amerikaanse onderzoekers zal vanuit het Amerikaanse perspectief aangeven waar de mogelijkheden en de noodzaak liggen voor samenwerking tussen Nederland en Amerika. De resultaten van de workshop zullen mede bepalend zijn voor de beleidsbeslissing van NWO eco-genomics als prioriteitsgebied voor financiering voor te dragen. Daartoe zal de conferentie een aantal breed gedragen, brandende en uitvoerbare onderzoeksvragen moeten opleveren, die een agenda voor het eco-genomics onderzoek in Nederland en voor de samenwerking tussen Nederlandse en Amerikaanse onderzoeksgroepen zal vormen.

How to get to Soeterbeeck in Ravenstein?
By road
Motorway A50 Arnhem - 's Hertogenbosch ( = coming from Arnhem): take the exit Ravenstein (nr.17); at roundabout turn left, next roundabout straight on, next roundabout turn left (de Rijt), and again left after 100 m (Elleboogstraat), enter the Soeterbeeck premises through the entrance gate.
Motorway A 50 's- Hertogenbosch - Arnhem (= coming from 's-Hertogenbosch). Take exit Ravenstein (nr.17); at T -junction, turn left, and again left at the traffic lights; first roundabout straight on, and again straight at second roundabout; next roundabout turn left at the crossing (De Rijt), and again left after 100 m (Elleboogstraat); enter the Soeterbeeck premises through the entrance gate.
By train
Take the slow train (NOT the Intercity or fast train) in Nijmegen or 's Hertogenbosch to Ravenstein, leaving every half hour. At the railway station in Ravenstein take the exit on the backside, and follow the small walking path (Stationspad); at the end of the path turn right and enter the Soeterbeeck premises through the entrance gate; walking from the station to Soeterbeeck takes approx. 10 minutes. If available at the station, you can also take the small local bus (so-called Buurtbus) and ask the driver to take you to Soeterbeeck.
Rooms
Single rooms at Soeterbeeck are available for those that have reserved rooms. Soeterbeeck is an old monastery, and the rooms are the former rooms of the monks. The rooms are simple, but breath the atmosphere of authentic monastery life. Showers are present on a share basis.
Food
The workshop will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday (for those staying in the centre), lunches on Saturday and Sunday, and diner on Saturday (for those that have booked). Also included are coffee and tea. Drinks at Saturday evening are available at your own expense.
Posters
During the workshop posters will be displayed in the area where we also have our coffee, tea and lunch. Timeslots are reserved for presentation of the posters, both on Saturday and Sunday. Posterboards will be present, with the regular size for posters.
Saturday
On Saturday the program will be devoted to exchange of information between NL and USA groups. Short NL presentations per university/institution will be alternated with slightly longer USA presentations.
In the evening a session will be devoted to the organisational details of an exchange program between Kansas State University and either individual NL universities or a larger NL-KSU exchange program. A proposal for such a set-up will be written by the KSU group, and will be handed out at the start of the workshop. As organisational
and financial details might be discussed, please make sure that you are prepared and know what type of exchange would be manageable for your university/institution.
Sunday discussion
On Sunday the workshop will be devoted to inventory and discussion of the potential for eco-genomics in the near future. Three themes will be introduced (see program), after which a discussion will follow on the perspectives of an eco-genomic approach within the theme. The themes are : eco-genomics at the individual level (including genetics, eco-physiology and evo-devo), eco-genomics at the population level (including population and evolution biology, conservation biology) and eco-genomics at the community level (including soil biology, ecosystem biology). To promote a fruitful and constructive discussion all participants are invited to suggest general points of discussion. These points will be gathered and put in a PowerPoint, as well as being send to the introductory speakers in advance. Points of discussion including the theme they refer to can be mailed till 25 September to Joop Ouborg (j.ouborg@science.ru.nl).
