D66 tijdens Gaypride Warschau: Handvest Grondrechten hoort in nieuw Europees

Op zaterdag 19 mei nam D66-kamerlid Boris van der Ham in de Poolse
hoofdstad Warschau deel aan een demonstratie voor gelijke rechten voor
homo's. Aan het begin van de optocht hield Van der Ham een korte
toespraak. De demonstratie in Polen is geen overbodige luxe, want de
Poolse regering doet er alles aan om de homorechten in te perken. De
minister van Onderwijs bereidt zelfs een wet voor die een mogelijk
beroepsverbod voor homo's inhoudt. D66 heeft hierover inmiddels
schriftelijke vragen gesteld.
Terwijl een paar duizend demonstranten naar de toespraken luisterden
was er op nog geen steenworp afstand een tegendemonstratie van
orthodox katholieke jongeren.
In de toespraak roept Van der Ham op om het Handvest van de
Grondrechten in een nieuw Europees verdrag op te nemen. De Nederlandse
regering wil het handvest juist uit een nieuw verdrag houden. D66
vindt dit jammer, omdat het handvest een extra garantie is voor
gelijke rechten en kansen voor iedereen.
Hieronder de toespraak van Boris van der Ham:
"I am very honoured to be here today. Gay people are just like
heterosexuals: They have ordinary jobs, some of them are in the army
to protect our freedom, others are doctors, entrepreneurs, teachers,
members of parliament. They pay taxes, they'll bake your bread, and
they'll nurse you when you're old. Hard working Europeans who
contribute to society. It is silly of the Polish government to try to
keep them out of certain jobs! It's not only silly, it is also against
de European morality and rules to discriminate!
Friends, these months our political leaders are discussing the future
of the European Constitution. I think it is very important that the
charter of fundamental rights will again be a part of a new treaty! It
is an extra guarantee for equal rights and opportunities for everyone,
also for gays. Some politicians say this charter is just symbolic. I
don't agree with them. Today, here in Warsaw, we can see how important
it actually is to underline these rights: Just watch them! (wijst op

Ladies and gentlemen, I hope everyone in Poland, in Europe, and the
rest of the world, will give priority to their compassion, and not to
their hate, priority to their informed sense, instead of their
prejudice. Today, we celebrate the right to follow our hearts. Thank
you."
