Inleiding
sluitend daarmee heb bezig gehouden.

e Engineering
Volgens van Dale wordt onder synthese verstaan:
070718 Afscheidsboekje Reinhoudt nl 27-08-2007 10:50 Pagina 6

zonder programmering vooraf. Begrijp me goed, ik ben niet a priori tegen 7
mijn promotieonderzoek in Delft.
In 1988

men. Bovendien was de publicatie erg vaag . Moleculair

Fig. 2.
In 1995 liet Remco
12
Fig. 3.

zeer hoog niveau gebracht.
We waren
070718 Afscheidsboekje Reinhoudt nl 27-08-2007 10:50 Pagina 14
nologie gaande was.

Intermezzo 3
Hoe nieuw is nieuw?
meter groot. Is dus alle chemie per definitie nanotechnologie?
vol met first, new, unique en novel.

heidsideaal was.
17
Moleculair
e Engineering
Fig. 8.
logie iets van science fiction, i.p.v. science.
In zijn boek "Engines of creation; the comming area of nanotechnology"
Frontiers.
070718 Afscheidsboekje Reinhoudt nl 27-08-2007 10:50 Pagina 19

breedte (breedte strategie) zou financieren.
e Engineering TUD.
De groep onderzoekers was breed, elektrotechnici, fysici en chemici.
Kwalitatief allemaal top wetenschappers.
Eén ding was

Albert v.d. Berg, Dave Blank, Jürgen Brugger en Kobus Kuipers, hoogleraar,
hier of elders.

Bovendien moeten we oog
· Nanomedicine
· Beyond More (Nano-electronica) 25
ven verlopen via NanoNed.
in Nederland.

Analyse
technologie.

Organisatie en financiering van Universitair Onderzoek
, Synthese en Analyse
Wetenschappelijk onderzoek is duur en technisch-wetenschappelijk onder-
zoek is erg duur.
alleen in beperkte mate additioneel financiert.
universiteiten gebeurt hetzelfde.
Moleculair tweede geldstroom budget.
In beide geval-
afgelopen jaren vaak is gebeurd.

Organische Chemie steeds weer opnieuw mijn plannen moest voorleggen

Overigens is
nologie iets kon betekenen.

Shinkai in Fukuoka.

nanotechnology. I wish my successor, Dave Blank, the best of luck in the
continuation of MESA+ together with Mirjam. I am convinced that they will
make it a great success.
I have already said much about NanoNed. I would just like to add that it is
an ongoing challenge to live up to the expectations placed upon us.
The greatest change in the last 30 years is the internationalisation. It would
take too long to thank everyone with whom I have had the pleasure of
working. I would, however, like to make an exception for our original EU
network. We have developed an extremely close tie with the universities of
Parma, Rome and Madrid. Accordingly, I would like to take this opportunity
to thank Rocco Ungaro, Luigi Mandolini and Javier De Mendoza for the
cooperation and the personal friendship. A particularly special occasion was
that of the JST project "Chemotransfiguration", together with Seiji Shinkai's
group in Fukuoka. It was a great honour to be the only group in the
Netherlands to date able to participate in this prestigious programme for five
years. We still enjoy a special relationship with the University of Kyushu.
I have been spoilt throughout the years with secretaries always capable of
finding all that I had lost and were capable of perfectly organising my time. 31
Izabel, Carla, Marieke and Annerie, my thanks. Molecular Engineering
Science, research group, institute, board and conferences take up much time
and leave little for other things. I know I was privileged as my work was my
hobby. On the home front, this meant adapting, accepting, cushioning and
frequently being alone. When I had just arrived in Twente and indicated that
I would like to join in on a walk, my daughter, who was six or seven at the , Synthesis and Analysis
time wondered "why I didn't have to go to work". I find some solace in the
fact that both Hank and Nicolette are just as busy with their work as I was
back then. Of course, we did have time for fun things such as our family
camping holidays.
Leni has always supported me 100%, which has been crucial over the years.
She was present at all 90 PhD ceremonies and her role in the social structure
of the research group was and remains extremely important.
Mr. Rector, Ladies and Gentlemen. It has been a pleasure!

again", we managed eventually to obtain a strong position in chemistry, both
at home and abroad. I am glad to say that, with NWO programmes such as
VENI,VIDI,VICI and other large programme subsidies, matters have changed.
The SMCT group has always been very close and I have had the pleasure of
working with an excellent technical and scientific staff. Our structure may
have been very traditional since, looking back at how we started, I found
focus and mass to be essential. This traditional setup may have caused
difficulties for the scientific staff from time to time. On the other hand, it did
give them a "flying start".Through Ernst Sudhölter, Johan Engbersen, Frank
van Veggel, Jurriaan Huskens and Bart-Jan Ravoo, we proved that our system
is a good basis for a professorship, even at a young age. Add the leading
positions in industry for Mercedes Crego Calama and Peter Timmerman,
and I am not afraid to say that there was an opportunity for personal
development for everyone. I am delighted that Peter has recently taken on a
position as part-time professor at the Amsterdam University.
I certainly feel privileged that I had the opportunity to work with them all,
and I have much for which to thank them. Without their efforts, there would
certainly not have been 90 successful PhD candidates. The latter, especially,
30 would not have been possible without Wimn Verboom, with whom I shared
responsibility for the research group in all its facets for over 25 years.
The technical staff, including Bianca,Tieme, Ben, Richard and their
predecessors were extremely important for the group's structure and for
continuity. I would like to mention Richard in particular, as he was always
there for me in the computer era. I hope that I will be able to call on him
still, even after today.
, Synthesis and Analysis Over the years, we had many temporary colleagues: post doc's, PhD and
master's students and trainees, from the Netherlands and abroad. We are
still in touch with a number of them, certainly those who remain in
academia. I am proud of all my PhD students and it is a pleasing thought
that a number of them are now also professors.
Molecular Engineering For me, the University of Twente has been a place with ample opportunity
for developing scientifically. My time as Scientific Director of MESA+
demanded much but also gave much satisfaction in return. From a scientific
perspective, it had a price, but I received much in return. It expanded my
scientific scope and gave me the feeling that I could mean something to
070718 Afscheidsboekje Reinhoudt eng 27-08-2007 10:40 Pagina 29
principle, I have always been a strong proponent of this approach. As
mentioned, the OTP programme from STW was of critical importance to us
and the free financing by CW (formerly SON) was fine. In both cases, the
basis was quality and a professional and anonymous system of reviewers.
Yet NWO's problem is that it is organised via the individual disciplines, with
STW being the only exception. It is therefore, by definition, an organisation
that is based on protecting interests. In this type of system, new
multidisciplinary fields have a tough time. NWO may be able to solve this
problem to a large degree by forming a board with representation by science,
industry and social organisations. This type of body would be independent of
disciplinary interests and would have the freedom to make choices. As STW
board member, I have great experience in this type of model for daily
management and the board of directors. In addition to objectivity, an
independent board also ensures social support that I feel is lacking for NWO.
With this type of management, the political powers that be may not as easily
place proposals on the backburner, as has frequently been the case to date.
As matters stand, I remain of the opinion that large national programmes
such as NanoNed are necessary and remain so. Rapid scientific
developments such as those in Genomics, ITC and nanotechnology demand 29
investments that the NWO organisation cannot bear alone in the current Molecular Engineering
setup. I must point out, however, that I see an important role for the NWO
areas in national initiatives such as the NNI.
The setting
, Synthesis and Analysis
The days when scientific research was a solitary affair are long gone.
Nowadays, it occurs in groups, institutes and networks. Our work was only
able to flourish because of the changing surroundings. The contemporary
situation of our research groups is in no way comparable to that of the
Organic Chemistry research group in 1975-1980 when we were entirely
isolated, both nationally and internationally. I remember quite vividly how I
had to repeatedly submit my plans for the SON work communities Organic
Synthesis and Physical Organic Chemistry without being awarded a
subsidy I might add. As a newcomer, certainly coming from the industry side
of things, it took years to fight your way in.Yet under the motto Luctor et
Emergo, which translates roughly as `If at first you don't succeed, try and try
070718 Afscheidsboekje Reinhoudt eng 27-08-2007 10:40 Pagina 28
is therefore the obvious means of anticipating new developments whereby
universities determine the priorities. The problem, however, is that there is a
tension within the financially autonomous universities between student
numbers and national research priorities. The University of Twente's
transparent financial model shows that there is an internal shift from
resources for research to education. The same thing is happening at other
universities.
Low student numbers in the technical and _ study programmes, combined
with high costs for research has, in many places, led to a considerable
reduction in staff and infrastructure. In my opinion, the instrument of choice
for setting priorities in education and research is to make a clear distinction
between graduate and undergraduate schools. This has nothing to do with
severing the link between education and research. In the United States,
the best researchers - Nobel prize winners - give first-year lectures! At the
presentation of the NWO strategy 2007-2010 "Science Appreciated!", the
previous Minister of Education, Cultural Affairs and Science, Maria van der
Hoeven, clearly stated that she wants to see greater numbers of Dutch Nobel
Prize winners, and cited the United States as her example. Could the cause
lie in the different ways in which the Netherlands and the US organise and
28 finance their research? It should be noted also that Max Planck institutes
regularly produce Nobel Prize winners.
At Twente, within the existing financing system, we have devised a part-
solution whereby the Scientific Director is responsible for research budgets.
We have functioned extremely well using this matrix model, although we
have occasionally had head-to-heads regarding responsibilities. There are no
two ways about it: the UT has benefited greatly from the introduction of this
, Synthesis and Analysis organisational structure. Where the UT was still failing collectively as far as
the depth strategy of 1997 is concerned, ICES/KIS-3 was extraordinarily
successful for BMTI, CTIT and certainly for MESA+.The construction and set-
up of a high quality Nanolab would never have succeeded without the
formation of institutes. In this type of matrix organisation, faculties can
concentrate fully on their primary task: quality bachelors and masters
Molecular Engineering education.
Even with clarity regarding budgets for university research with respect to
education, there are still various modalities. The position of the NWO
Chairman is clear, however: increase the second resource stream budget. In

Developments in the profession
Over the last 30 years, our research has moved from covalent into non-
covalent synthesis, from chemistry in solution to surface chemistry, from
structure to function and from mono-discipline into multidisciplinary
research.
Supramolecular chemistry has certainly contributed to disappearing
boundaries within chemistry and to the repositioning of scientific
questioning as the guiding principle. Nanotechnology is particularly exciting
because the boundaries between the disciplines themselves have fallen
away. On a molecular scale, there is no longer a difference between
chemistry, biology or physics; just a difference in expertise. This is a
tremendously exciting phenomenon in which scientists across the whole
spectrum are having to learn each others' language.
Yet there is also a dilemma. Nanotechnology demands a broad approach,
scientists who speak the same language, but also specialists who exercise 27
their profession (chemistry, physics) at the highest level. There is no easy Molecular Engineering
solution to this issue. It would seem self-evident to choose a good
disciplinary basis in the B phase, and to move into nanotechnology in the
D phase and one's PhD research.
Organisation and financing university research , Synthesis and Analysis
Scientific research is expensive and technical-scientific research is very
expensive. The government has made provisions for this by including a
relatively large strategic research component in the financing of the
Netherlands' three technical universities.
In our country, a conscious choice was made to finance the bulk of scientific
research in the public sector through universities. We do not have Max
Planck Institutes, CNRS or CNR where financing is independent of student
numbers. The result is a relatively small second resource stream that only
offers additional financing to a limited degree. The primary resource stream

So far, as far as `synthesis' is concerned, I have discussed my experiences in
building molecules, supramolecular structures and nanostructures, as well
as organisations that facilitate science.
In the second, far shorter part of my story, I would like to analyse a number
of the developments of the last 30 years.

Cabinet Position Nanotechnologies
"from small to Great"
Just before the elections on 22 November 2006, the third Balkenende cabinet
submitted its vision of nanotechnology to the Second Chamber. It states that
nanotechnologies are important to the Netherlands. They contribute to
strengthening our economic structure and competitive position and offer
possible solutions to issues in, for example, the environment, public health,
nutrition, sustainable energy and safety. Summarised, the vision states the
following: nanotechnologies are new technologies that are being researched
widely around the world and that are being applied increasingly. It is
important that the Netherlands participates in these developments and not
only tries to keep up but rather aims to maintain a place within the top. We
must also pay heed to the possible risks.
In order to strengthen the Netherlands' position, the cabinet has drafted a
research agenda along the following main lines:
· Nano-medicine
· Beyond Moore (Nanoelectronics) 25
· Functional nanoparticles, surfaces with patterns on a nano-scale Molecular Engineering
· Water purification and energy provision
· Nutrition and health
The cabinet also notes that, in 2003, the Netherlands held position six
regarding public R&D expenditure per head of the population and that many
initiatives run through NanoNed. NanoNed's role is mentioned in various , Synthesis and Analysis
places, including as a major BSIK programme. Regarding the creation of a
national research agenda, the cabinet mentions "the interesting initiative by
FOM, STW and NanoNed to develop a National Nano Initiative". In this
research agenda, the cabinet asks the initiators to "also devote attention to the
conditions associated with proper and responsible nano research, such as
training programmes, infrastructure and risk analysis".
Of course, as Chairman of the NanoNed board, I consider these developments
extremely positive and believe they offer hope for the future. I assume that, in
whatever shape or form, NanoNed will continue to play a role in research in
the Netherlands.
070718 Afscheidsboekje Reinhoudt eng 27-08-2007 10:41 Pagina 24
They were extremely hectic times as the programme was formed through a
unique process of self-selection.The objective was clear: to finance the best
researchers to perform true nanotechnological research. That definition was
not the same everywhere!
My experience at MESA+ was extremely valuable in this process. The
difference, however, lay in the complexity with so many different disciplines
and locations. In the end, we developed and still have a matrix organisation
at NanoNed whereby eleven programme directors are charged with scientific
coordination. The responsible management and Board of Directors are
independent and NanoNed is supported administratively by an independent
NanoNed agency at STW.The total budget of EUR235m allows us to compete
effectively internationally.
The result of our efforts has proven to be more than worth it and I consider
it an extremely successful experiment. The cabinet position published at the
end of last year on the role of the Netherlands in nanotechnology will
hopefully ensure the necessary continuity after 2009.

Internationally, the rise of nanotechnology was reason to coordinate and
create institutions. In the United States, the NNI was formed, alongside the
formation of the NCCR in Switzerland and the NINT in Canada. From within
the KNAW, together with Hans Mooij en George Robillard, we took the
initiative in 2001 to initiate the ICES/KIS-3 proposal "Nanotechnology".
Following an investigatory round by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (EZ),
others joined our initiative to set up the NanoNed consortium.
It was not a simple process, yet with the support of STW, we managed to
create a single national proposal. The process was boosted tremendously
when EZ allocated the NanoImpuls programme from the knowledge
impulse. The most developed parts of the developing NanoNed programme
got off the ground with a subsidy of NLG50m for investments and projects.
In the meantime, the NanoNed programme was taking on definite shape;
Philips joined the consortium and the ICES/KIS proposal was submitted.

Fig. 9. The organization chart of MESA+
The first programme directors contributed considerably to the cohesion,
infrastructure and scientific level that characterises MESA+ today. It is
interesting to note, perhaps, that these scientific pioneers also did rather
well individually: within 5 years, Albert v.d. Berg, Dave Blank, Jürgen Brugger
, Synthesis and Analysis and Kobus Kuipers were awarded professorships, here or elsewhere. To our
great regret, Gerrit Gerritsma did not benefit from the success as he passed
away before the end of the first MESA+ period. It was a great loss for all of
us.
The process of development that MESA+ experienced between 1999-2004 in
Molecular Engineering an organisational and scientific sense was also the basis for the UT's central
role in NanoNed, the national programme for nanotechnology, as well as in
Frontiers, one of the KP6 EU programmes for nanotechnology.
070718 Afscheidsboekje Reinhoudt eng 27-08-2007 10:41 Pagina 21
Now, some ten years later, I am willing to state that this decision put back
the development of nanotechnology in the Netherlands by some 3-5 years.
The fact that the previous Minister of Education, Cultural Affairs and Science
decided again and without proper evaluation to continue the financing of
the six "top research schools" means that the NWO selection committee
spent roughly NLG1.5b on the first resource stream within a few meetings.
The NWO has complained often about ad hoc policy in research financing,
such as for ICES/KIS or Smart Mix, but it would not harm them to take a look
at themselves. Moreover, over a 15 year period, this represents a structural
reduction in research budget for the UT of some EUR2.5m to EUR3m per
year.
The Board of Governors was dismayed considerably by the decision, as it was
trying purposefully to introduce focus and mass in research on the agenda.
One thing was clear: ad hoc policy such as for the depth strategy was not
particularly likely to be successful. Only proposals with proven focus and
mass had come through. As a result, the governors decided in 1998 to merge
the MESA and CMO institutes to create the necessary critical mass and
asked me to take on the position of Scientific Director for a merged institute
MESA+. Rector Frans van Vught put it as follows: "You have to do this!".
It created a tricky situation for me. Our supramolecular research was at an 21
international top level and, with the Simon Stevin prize, nanotechnology Molecular Engineering
research had just started.
MESA+ is based on a number of principles: scientific quality, integration of
disciplines and valorisation. As far as the latter is concerned, I was lucky
enough to meet Kees Eijkel and together we shaped MESA+ to become what
it is today. We worked extremely closely for over seven years and Kees' input , Synthesis and Analysis
extended way beyond just valorisation and spin-offs. He was the best
sparring partner I could have wished for.
The research programme did not just appear, of course. In consultation with
all the groups, it took us a year to select five areas of focus (Strategic
Research Orientations), with nanotechnology playing a central role.
If there is a secret to the success of MESA+, it is the position of SRO
Programme Director, a position that offers a young, independent scientist
the opportunity and challenge to explore new territory together with 4 or 5
MESA+ groups.

The last ten years
Creating institutes at the UT
Developing a scientific university institute is defined perfectly in a definition
of "synthesis" in the Dutch Van Dale dictionary: "'joining separate, often
opposing elements to create a new whole'. Scientists are, in general,
extremely attached to their independence and external recognition for their
own work. I fully understand their reasoning!
Setting up MESA+ was a textbook example of synthesis. Convincing everyone
involved that MESA+ would offer added value for the individual group
without infringing on independence was crucial. Owing to our cooperation
with Piet Bergveld's group on CHEMFET sensors as of 1983, our group was
part of MESA.The history of the institute dates back to 1981-'82 when the
Dutch government decided to set up three "Centres for Microelectronics" at
the three technical universities. At the opening of the academic year 1981-
'82,Van de Kroonenberg stated: "that it should be possible to create a major chip
and sensor laboratory within the THT". This was achieved to a certain
20 degree through the MESA clean room. The technical infrastructure played a
central role but we were not assigned our own budget for research.
In 1998, Minister Ritzen made a serious attempt to make the financing of
university research more dynamic. The mechanism chosen was a
considerable shift in resources from the universities to NWO, which would
use it to finance top research (depth strategy) and research across the board
(width strategy). In this competition, the UT was banking on a proposal
, Synthesis and Analysis entitled Nanolink together with Delft Technical University. The group of
researchers was broad: electrical engineers, physicists and chemists.
They were all top quality scientists. The VSNU score for these groups was
34.5 out of a possible 35 points!
Despite these credentials, the NWO commission rejected the proposal in the
Molecular Engineering first round based on a procedure that an evaluation commission would later
describe as: "Recommendations were requested for the assessment for
which it has been noted that the number of usable reviewers was rather
limited. The quality of the reviewers' reports also varied somewhat".
070718 Afscheidsboekje Reinhoudt eng 27-08-2007 10:41 Pagina 19
It was clear from the start that nanotechnology was more than just
supramolecular chemistry and led logically to cooperation with physical and
electrical engineering groups with the UT.This infrastructure was crucial as
our chemistry related increasingly to surfaces instead of solutions. The
necessity of cooperation in a high-level infrastructure as well as the
(inter)national competition led automatically to focus, mass and
concentration.Within the UT, this is now ongoing within the MESA+ Institute
for Nanotechnology, within NanoNed for the Netherlands and within
Frontiers in Europe.
These processes of concentration, cooperation and making choices were not
self-evident, and I had to make an important decision: continue in my own
area of expertise or develop the infrastructure needed to enhance the level
of our own research in nanotechnology.

At the UT's Dies Natalis in 1999, I held a passionate plea for nanotechnology
at the UT entitled Nanotechnology: challenge and reality of the lower limit.
The emphasis was very much on reality as, in the period between 1990-1999,
nanotechnology was shrouded somewhat in an air of science fiction instead
of science. This was, in part, due to people like Eric Drexler . In his book
"Engines of creation; the coming area of nanotechnology, he sketched a world of
objects created by mechanosynthesis, or robotics. It was a laboured idea
without scientific basis.
Nanotechnology was actually put on the world map by Bill Clinton. In a
speech at Caltech in January 2000, he declared nanotechnology to be the
technology of the 21st century and announced the National Nano Initiative,
with a budget of US$470m . With a single political speech,
nanotechnology had arrived on the agenda of politics and policymakers.
In the Netherlands, an inventory had been commissioned previously by the
Stichting Toekomstbeeld der Techniek (STT) (Future Status of Technology
Foundation).Together with an enthusiastic group, we drew up an inventory
of the Netherlands' and Flanders' strengths, resulting in the book
Nanotechnology: towards a molecular construction kit" . Our investigation and
18 the book showed that the Netherlands had the necessary knowledge on a
broad front to play a leading role in the field.
When I was awarded the Simon Stevin prize by STW in 1998, and was given
the opportunity to spend 1 million guilders on new research with a
utilisation aspect, I used the resources to initiate the "Nanolithography"
programme. This programme laid the foundations for the most important
part of the research we have performed in the SMTC research group over the
, Synthesis and Analysis last ten years and eventually led to a separate academic chair: Molecular
Nanomanufacturing.

L'Oreal Recherche describes why, in Egypt, hair was painted with lead
salts. Using electron microscopy, the scientists have shown that, in a reaction
of lead ions with sulphur-containing amino acids in hair protein, lead sulphide
nanoparticles of some four to five nanometres are formed. Since these deep-
black nanocrystals are so small, they do not damage the hair structure and
give the deep-black hair colour that was a powerful symbol of beauty in
Egypt.
A second example from antiquity is the Lycurgus cup that is kept in the
British Museum. This glass beaker appears green, but if you shine a light from
the inside it turns red. We now know that nanoparticles in the glass absorb a
different part of the optical spectrum in reflection and in transmission.

These examples are supposed to show that nanotechnology is nothing new.
This is an incorrect conclusion, however. In the current sense of the word,
nanotechnology allows us to create and analyse individual nanostructures and
to subsequently build larger structures. The crucial difference, therefore, is the
individual nanostructure and not the random collection.

Intermezzo 3
How new is new?
Now while science may be about progress, scientific disciplines are often
conservative and focus mainly on continuity. Nanotechnology cannot be
pigeonholed and related discussions are often along the line of "What's new
about it?" Organic molecules are typically 1 to 5 nanometres in size. So is not
all chemistry nanotechnology by definition? Sceptics have devoted much
energy to this discussion and it must be said that, in science, much is less new
than is presented as such. Numerous scientific publications contain words
such as "first", "new", "unique" and "novel".
In this vein, colloids, for example, are nanoparticles and we have known about
them for over 150 years since the work of Michael Faraday. We know also
now that nanoparticles played a daily role in antiquity. A recent publication by

This is not the setting to discuss nanotechnology in too much detail.
It suffices perhaps to consider it the ultimate step in the ongoing process of
miniaturisation as we know it from chip technology. An interesting feature
of nanotechnology is that it is not bound to a single discipline. The ongoing
miniaturisation of transistors in microelectronics and the assembly of
supramolecular structures brings us to the same dimension.

"molecularisation" changed biology.

transition. In the 1990s, the CHEMFET work evolved to take in the chemistry
of two nanometre-thick monolayers of molecular receptors .The work
on these "self-assembled monolayers" led to our current research in
nanomanufacturing and molecular print boards.
Nanotechnology
Our publications on the molecular receptors with a "nanosize cavity" and
nanometre-thin monolayers of molecular receptors on gold were also
noticed apparently in the United States. Shortly afterwards, I was visited by
Dr.Tollens who had been sent on a mission from the US to find out what
was going on in Europe and Japan in nanotechnology.Through him, I became
involved as editor of the supramolecular section for the Nanotechnology
magazine that has been published by the Institute of Physics since 1990.
I have followed nanotechnology's development intently since 1994 and
shifted our own research in that direction. It was a logical step to move from
non-covalent synthesis and monolayers to bottom-up nanotechnology and
14 nanomanufacturing.
Formally speaking, nanotechnology is the science and technology of objects
with dimensions between 1 and 100 nanometres. Nano actually means
dwarf in Greek. What makes it so special is that this represents the lower
limit of the molecular world, matter's smallest building blocks. To give you
an impression of the size we are talking about, this following picture shows
three spherical objects: the earth, a football and the "bucky ball", the C60
, Synthesis and Analysis molecule.

This work shows that, on occasion, frustration can lead to positive
developments as it demands a total change in direction. 13
Molecular Engineering
From "classic" covalent synthesis, were grew towards non-covalent
synthesis, or the assembly of functional supramolecular structures. I
personally consider the work between 1994-2004 to be the highpoint of our
supramolecular research. In that period, Peter Timmerman, Mercedes Crego
Calama, post-docs and graduate students elevated our research to an , Synthesis and Analysis
extremely high level. The first example of an enantiomerically-pure
supramolecular complex and optical amplification in rosettes in the work by
Leonard Prins are certainly highlights of our work.
Perhaps more importantly, it was this work on nanometre-size
supramolecular structures that led us naturally to nanotechnology. Another
development that contributed to this started in 1983 with the work of Albert
van de Berg on the CHEMFET sensors. This led us very early on to surface
chemistry. In the practice of our laboratory, this was a revolution as,
from a technical perspective, chemistry on surfaces is entirely different to
that in solution. With groups such as those of Jacob Sagiv and Israel

such as rotaxanes, catenanes, grids and supramolecular polymer materials.
Within our group too, it was a time to think and seek other routes.
Instead of the tough covalent route, we went looking for building blocks
capable of aggregating spontaneously into defined supramolecules that in turn
were capable of recognising molecules. In 1995, with his first Röntgen
structure of the double rosette, Remco Vreekamp showed that this was an
attractive strategy.

The question as to whether a "guest" would fit within the "space" in this
molecule kept us occupied for years and led frequently to heated discussions.
For me personally, it was one of my best scientific results when, in her thesis
in 2003, Jessica Kerkhof described the Röntgen structure of a complex with
three alizarin molecules.

Frustration and motivation
The highlight of our work on covalent synthesis of molecular receptors was
also the start of non-covalent synthesis.
In his thesis, Peter Timmerman describes the synthesis of receptors for
steroids. We named the ultimate receptor the "Holand", as the molecule
contained a rigid cavity in which a steroid molecule fits perfectly. After a
truly phenomenal synthesis, it turned out that the "Holand" did not possess
the necessary complexation properties.

It was a great disappointment, certainly since it was not an isolated incident.
Even with advanced molecular modelling techniques, the predictive value of
complexation properties turned out to be inadequate where it concerned large
guest molecules.
We were, however, not the only ones to experience the problem as of 1995,
the work in supramolecular chemistry shifts from receptor-design to areas

In the 1980s and 1990s, this field grew to become the supramolecular
10 chemistry as we know it today. In the end, this led to our work on large
hydrogen-bonded supramolecular structures, the rosettes and on non-
covalent synthesis.

Until then, organic synthesis had focused on the primary process, the
covalent synthesis of molecules. How these molecules communicate with
one another or other molecules was not studied systematically. Of course,
it was know that matters such as the boiling point or melting point were
related to the cohesion between the molecules. In the years up until 1980,
supramolecular chemistry was limited to the molecular recognition of ions
by macrocyclic polyethers.
Our group also investigated this field in detail, focusing mainly on
membrane separations (with the group of Kees Smolders and Dick
Bargeman) and CHEMFET sensors. The latter kept us occupied for years.
Together with Piet Bergveld's group, we developed metal sensors based on
microchips. This led eventually to our largest industrial joint project with
PRIVA and STW. While it was not a huge commercial success, the
combination of molecular recognition and solid-state electronics is as
relevant as ever in medical diagnostics.
The interaction between crown ethers and neutral molecules was described
in the third publication by Pedersen, but only in qualitative terms. Moreover,
the publication was very vague.
---
Around 1974-1975, we had become interested at Shell in complexes of Molecular Engineering
neutral molecules and crown ethers for various reasons. And, together with
Feike de Jong, we synthesised a number of such complexes .This work
was the basis for research we continued in 1979 in Twente.
It was a milestone when, together with Dick Feil, Sybolt Harkema and Gerrit
van Hummel, we proved using Röntgen analysis that complexes of crown , Synthesis and Analysis
ethers with neutral molecules such as urea and nitromethane had a defined
structure and that such supramolecular complexes also existed in solution.

Working on biologically-active molecules had one disadvantage. The biological
experiments were extremely time-consuming and were performed remote.
As a result, feedback for our synthetic research was very slow. The research
did generate active compounds, but the synthesis processes were too long
and no longer suitable for doctoral research. We terminated the experiments
in 1988.
In addition to this work, I started research in Twente that I had begun at
Shell in 1972. In my inaugural lecture in 1979, I announced plans to focus our
research on macrocyclic compounds. I describe the field as: "one of the most
promising fields of research in which organic chemistry could contribute to
breakthroughs in areas such as membrane transport, isotope separation, chiral
compounds and enzyme-like catalysis. As far as organic synthesis is concerned, this
means that...... the associative (read non-covalent) bond will become extremely
important" .
This intention, or prediction if you will, is still the basis of our current
research. Due in part to the fact that Pedersen, Lehn and Cram were awarded
the Nobel Prize in 1987 , the area developed fast into a field of its own,
known as "Supramolecular Chemistry". I am proud to say that the
8 Netherlands has developed over the last 25 years into the leading nation in
this field. To illustrate, at the last VNSU assessment in October 2002, the
supramolecular groups in Nijmegen, Eindhoven, Groningen and Twente were
in the select group with a maximum score of 4x5.
In the last 15 years, the UT has awarded three colleagues, Jean Marie Lehn,
George Whitesides and Sir Fraser Stoddart an honorary degree for their work
in this field. This illustrates the importance of this field of expertise for the
, Synthesis and Analysis University of Twente.
Supramolecular Chemistry
When the UT awarded Jean Marie Lehn an honorary doctorate in 1991,
Molecular Engineering he gave a highly expressive talk about the discipline, which he described as
"Molecular Sociology". As with people, we can ascribe characteristics to
molecules. While one likes to attach itself to another, others like to go it alone.
This "social" aspect of molecules was not developed until 1970 after three
groundbreaking publications on crown ethers by Charles Pedersen in 1967.

second-stream income, the Board of Governors at the time made a point of
acting accordingly.
At the same time, there was much going on in the outside world.
The foundation in 1981 of the Technologie Stichting STW (Technology
Foundation STW) was crucial for application-oriented research and of great
importance for technical universities, certainly the UT. Both personally and
as a research group, we owe the STW much as it allowed us to outgrow our
sub-critical size. For the last 25 years, the STW has supported my work
extremely generously. Combining scientific quality and applying
fundamental knowledge fits perfectly within this environment. The Simon
Stevin Mastership, which I was awarded in 1998, is still my most treasured
scientific prize.
Our research was financed primarily by what is now known as the "Open
Technology programme", which offers scope for individual ideas without
prior programming. Please do not misunderstand me here, however, I am not
against programme financing a priori but I will return to this point later in
detail.

Organic synthesis Molecular Engineering
Synthesising a new molecule is one of the most creative activities in science.
It is similar to composing a piece of music or a creating a painting. From a
limited set of atoms, chemical synthesis allows the formation of an infinite
number of new molecules. Robert B. Woodward, the world's greatest
synthetic chemist and founder of modern synthesis had good reason to , Synthesis and Analysis
describe his work as The art of Organic Synthesis. In 1965, in his Nobel Prize
acceptance speech, he provided an impressive example of creativity using
the total synthesis of Cephalosporin C as an example. I followed this work
very closely as it was the subject of my PhD research in Delft.
During the first years in Twente, we were focused on organic, covalent
synthesis, such as that of Mitomycin C, an important cytostatic agent.
Owing to its complex structure and possible application in cancer therapy,
it provided a great challenge. The research was supported by KWF and was a
great project, in cooperation with Wim Verboom as starting post-doc,
Bob Pinedo, Wim van Oort and later Nico Speckamp.

defend the importance of the basic subjects within the chemical technology
study programme.
To illustrate, I quote a passage that addresses the question of whether
research into organic chemistry belongs at a Technical University.
I quote: "If one assumes that research into the base sciences is necessary at the TH,
then the foremost question addresses those conditions that this research must meet".
I followed up with four main points, the most important of which is: "It must
appeal to the attitude of the chemical engineer, who focuses on the application of
research results".
In the coming forty minutes, I ask you to keep this starting point in the back
of your mind, as this was the opinion of the basic subjects in the curriculum
of the Chemical Technology faculty at the TH Twente.
The early years
From 1975-1985, the UT differed considerably from the university we find
here today. At the opening of the Academic Year 1978-1979, my first year as
6 full-time professor, the rector announced 11 PhD degrees . Five years later,
in 1982, the number had risen to 17 . It was clearly not a "research
university".
At the time, discussions focused mainly on education, student numbers and
university administration. There were almost no external resources for
research. In the early 1980s, thanks mainly to Harry van de Kroonenberg, the
climate at the UT changed. The focus shifted from purely internal to include
, Synthesis and Analysis the outside world. The concept "Entrepreneurial University" is inseparably
linked to Harry's name. In his speech at the opening of the Academic Year in
1981-1982 , he was already talking about knowledge transfer and the
reward for that function by the government. Entrepreneurship, in his vision,
was not about waiting for The Hague to do something; it was about doing
something yourself. The issue lay more in awareness than in solely
Molecular Engineering knowledge transfer and setting up spin-off companies. Quote: "An
Entrepreneurial University is not one led by an entrepreneur: it is a university in
which entrepreneurship is evident on all levels." And "This creates a `flat', non-
bureaucratic organisation with a strong market focus."
Through output financing, fund creation by research groups and stimulating

The job application
Ladies and gentlemen, if it had been up to the Ministry of Education of the
time, I would not be here with you today. While clearing up the research group
archives, I found a letter dated 8 September 1975,
in which a civil servant writes the following on behalf of the Minister of
Education at the time: "I wonder, in part owing to his relatively young age and
on what we have before us whether Dr. D.N. Reinhoudt has sufficient
(scientific, didactic, organisational, etc.) qualities I consider necessary for
appointing an (extraordinary) professor. In my opinion, the recommendations
by the sister faculties do not show these skills, or at least, show them
insufficiently."
I end the quote here, whereby the recommendations by the sister faculties
were clearly of importance. It is solely thanks to the trust of the Dean at the
time, Jan Schuijer, and the permanent staff of the Organic Chemistry group,
Wim Trompenaars, Maarten Vrijland, Hans den Hertog and Piet Benders that I
am speaking to you here today.
In a time in which one is judged for every decision, I hope I have not betrayed 5
this trust. Molecular Engineering
Webster's New world dictionary of the American Language defines synthesis
as follows:
a. The putting together of parts or elements so as to form a whole "opposed
to analysis". , Synthesis and Analysis
b. The formation of a complex chemical compound by the combining of two
simpler compounds, elements, or radicals.
c. In philosophy, deductive reasoning from simple elements.
No concept better describes that which I want to discuss with you today.
As I was preparing this lecture, I reread the text of my inaugural lecture,
which was entitled Chemical technology: synthesis of chemistry and technology.
Even then, synthesis held centre stage. This is perhaps not so surprising if
you know that, back in 1975, organic chemical synthesis was my area of
expertise. If I was I to read my inaugural lecture to you today, you might
notice that it is somewhat timid and defensive. In fact, it was an attempt to

Introduction
As a scientist, reflection is not one of my favourite pastimes. Science is about
the future and progress, and not about the past.Yet, at a valedictory lecture
such as this, looking back is unavoidable as my work as full-time professor
at the University of Twente ends tomorrow. While I will still be assisting a
number of graduate students with their PhDs, and will remain Chairman of
the NanoNed board for a few more years, these activities too will soon be a
thing of the past.
So, with some reluctance, I will reflect on what has been, if only to do justice
to all those who worked so hard over the last 32 years to create what are
now the SMCT and Molecular Nanofabrication research groups, the MESA+
Institute, and NanoNed.
In my talk here today, I will be discussing research, as this is what I have
focused all my energy and time on over the past eight years. I will talk about
organic and supramolecular chemistry, nanotechnology, MESA+, the
University of Twente and NanoNed.
4 And, in an effort to make it somewhat interesting to those who are not fully-
versed with my research, I have included a number of intermezzos during
which I look at a number of other matters in more detail.
The thread throughout my story is `synthesis'.The synthesis of organic
molecules, of course, but also the synthesis of institutes, networks and
university organisations. For this reason, I have entitled this valedictory
lecture Molecular Engineering, Synthesis and Analysis, for I would like also to
, Synthesis and Analysis reflect with you on the results of the various syntheses in which I have been
involved.
As in chemistry, no synthesis is complete until the results have been
analysed thoroughly. Based on this analysis, I will close my talk with you
today with a number of conclusions and look beyond the here and now.
Molecular Engineering
To start, however, I would like to talk about how it all began: my job
application
