Gasunie and Vopak jointly investigate the
feasibility for developing a distribution hub for
handling and temporary storage of CO2

Gas infrastructure company Gasunie and bulk liquid storage provider Royal Vopak (Vopak)
announce that the companies will jointly investigate the feasibility for developing a distribution hub
R for the handling and temporary storage of CO2 in the Netherlands. Gasunie and Vopak are currently
conducting the joint construction of Gate terminal, the first Dutch import terminal for liquefied natural
gas (LNG) in Rotterdam. The companies want to explore the possibilities for creating a CO2
E distribution hub in The Netherlands, where gaseous and/or liquefied CO2 can be received from the
CO2 emitters and where these volumes subsequently can be discharged in large seagoing vessels
S or transferred to pipeline networks for transportation to the numerous depleted offshore gas fields.

development of new solutions for CO2 capture and temporary storage in The Netherlands, in either
gaseous or liquefied form. This could mean an important contribution to the Dutch sustainability
objectives."
As part of the Dutch climate change mitigation policies, the Dutch government expects a substantial
reduction of the CO2 emissions from the power generators and other industrial activities. Energy
efficiency and renewables alone will not be sufficient to timely meet the policy targets for
CO2 reduction. For this reason plans are currently being developed to capture CO2 and for the
transshipment and permanent storage of CO2 in depleted gas fields in the North Sea. A potential
CO2 distribution hub in the Rotterdam area could benefit from Gate terminal's presence with regard
to the available cold energy.

Koninklijke Vopak N.V. (Vopak) kondigen aan dat de bedrijven de haalbaarheid gaan onderzoeken
voor het gezamenlijk ontwikkelen van een distributieknooppunt voor de afhandeling en tijdelijke
E opslag van CO2 in Nederland. Gasunie en Vopak bouwen momenteel samen Gate terminal, de
eerste Nederlandse ontvangstterminal voor vloeibaar gemaakt aardgas (LNG) in Rotterdam.
De bedrijven willen de mogelijkheden onderzoeken voor het creëren van een CO2
R distributieknooppunt in Nederland, waar gasvormig en/of vloeibaar gemaakt CO2 ontvangen kan
worden van bedrijven die CO2 uitstoten en waar deze volumes vervolgens kunnen worden
S overgeslagen naar zeeschepen of doorgezet naar pijpleidingnetwerken voor het transport naar de
diverse lege aardgasvelden voor de Nederlandse kust.

Voorzitter van de Raad van Bestuur van Gasunie, reageerden beiden:
"De gedeelde visie van Gasunie en Vopak om de mogelijkheden te onderzoeken kunnen leiden tot
de ontwikkeling van nieuwe oplossingen voor afgevangen CO2 en de tijdelijke opslag in Nederland,
in gasvormige of vloeibaar gemaakte vorm. Dit kan een belangrijke bijdrage aan de Nederlandse
duurzaamheiddoelstellingen betekenen."
Als onderdeel van het Nederlandse klimaatbeleid, verwacht de Nederlandse regering een
substantiële vermindering van de CO2 emissies van de elektriciteitsproducenten en andere
industriële activiteiten. Energie-efficiency en `renewables' alleen zullen niet voldoende blijken te zijn
om tijdig de beleidsdoelstellingen voor CO2 reductie te bereiken. Om deze reden worden in
Nederland momenteel plannen ontwikkeld voor het afvangen van CO2 en voor het overslaan en
permanent opslaan hiervan in lege aardgasvelden in de Noordzee. Een mogelijk CO2
distributieknooppunt in de Rotterdamse regio zou kunnen profiteren van de beschikbare koude
energiestromen van Gate terminal.
