MORPHIA is gebaseerd op een script van de inmiddels overleden Sergei Bodrov Jr (Brother, The Bear's Kiss). De film is geïnspireerd op Mikhail Bulgakovs Notes Of A Young Doctor en volgt de aftakeling van de aan morfine verslaafde dokter Polyakov. Hij is op dat moment in de herfst van 1917 uitgezonden naar een klein afgezonderd Russisch stadje. Poyakovs verwoestende verval gaat gepaard met lichamelijke amputaties die, vanwege de opkomst van de Bolsjewieken, een parallel vormen met de neergang van de sociale en politieke balans in de regio.
MORPHIA brengt op een wijze een grimmige en visueel confronterend verhaal van totaal verlies en laat wederom het buitengewone en compromisloze talent van de Russische enfant terrible Aleksey Balabanov zien (Cargo 200, Of Freaks and Men, Brat).

In Morphia, Balabanov unfolds the second part of this philosophical program. He says that an individual in Russia has no chance. If you want to do something as an individual, well, for instance such a trifle as to be occupied with your profession, or to help people, or to fall in love, or simply survive, then you can't manage without morphine! Whoever you are, give yourself a shot of a drug, go to the movie theatre, and laugh with everybody at the Comedy Club (á la the beginning of the last century). Alexey Balabanov on Morphia:
The screenplay is based on Mikhail Bulgakov's ruthless Notes of a Young Doctor. Having been a country doctor, a lot of things that Bulgakov describes he had experienced himself, including a severe addiction to morphine. In his native Kiev, highly skilled doctors and people close to him nursed the future writer back to health. He had time to change his profession and create his major works - The White Guard, The Master and Margarita, and to write Morphia, his autobiographical chronicle of slow destruction. I took this screenplay because it was written by Sergei Bodrov, Jr. He was my friend and we wanted to do a lot together, we discussed different projects. I decided to continue what he had no time to. He wanted to shoot this screenplay very much.
