G32 steunen "Stockholm appeal on Climate Change"

De burgemeesters en wethouders van de G32 staan achter het Stockholm appeal on climate change. Deze oproep voor klimaatbescherming en duurzaamheid is eind vorige maand in Stockholm opgesteld door Eurocities (organisatie van Europese steden) en de US Conference of Mayors (conferentie van Amerikaanse burgemeesters). Het Stockholm Appeal wordt ingebracht bij de huidige Klimaatconferentie in Kopenhagen. De ondertekenaars doen een oproep aan de regeringsleiders om daar een internationale overeenkomst voor klimaatbescherming af te sluiten.
Voorzitter Jan Hamming van de G32 (pijler fysiek) en loco-burgemeester van Tilburg heeft samen met de voorzitter van de pijler economie de steunverklaring van de G32 voor het Stockholm appeal on Climate Change ondertekend. " De 32 grote steden leveren een substantiele bijdrage aan de nationale klimaatsdoelstellingen en die van de Stockholm appael. Onze steden willen samen met de inwoners, bedrijven en wetenschappelijke instellingen lokaal resultaten boeken en oplossingen vinden voor een mondiaal probleem" aldus de twee bestuurders in hun verklaring.
Sten Nordin, de burgemeester van Stockholm en initiatiefnemer van de Stockholm Appeal zei: "We weten dat het mogelijk is om economische groei te combineren met krachtige milieumaatregelen. Onze steden brengen veel innovatieve en effectieve strategieën in de praktijk om het milieu te beschermen. Met onze kracht, kennis, ervaring en geboekte successen op lokaal niveau, kunnen lokale overheden van onze steden een cruciale rol spelen bij de klimaatsbescherming. Onze inwoners en steden zullen bijdragen tot het in de praktijk brengen van de overeenkomst die door de afgevaardigden van de steden tijdens de Klimaatconferentie in Kopenhagen wordt getekend."
"Het gevecht tegen klimaatverandering zal gewonnen of verloren worden in de Europese steden, waar 80 procent van de Europese inwoners wonen. Gemeentelijke overheden zijn het beste in staat plaatselijke oplossingen zoeken voor dit mondiale probleem. Niet alleen nemen steden de leiding door het goede voorbeeld te geven, maar ze staan ook het dichtste bij de inwoners en de bedrijven die de hulpbronnen van onze planeet efficiënter moeten gaan gebruiken," aldus Jozias van Aartsen, president van Eurocities.
"Burgemeesters in de Verenigde Staten staan achter onze Europese collega's bij de vraag naar internationale erkenning voor de rol van plaatselijke leiders waar het de bescherming van het klimaat betreft. De burgemeesters staan vooraan als het om creatieve strategieën gaat. In de Verenigde Staten hebben zij de nationale overheid gedwongen de strijd tegen de klimaatsverandering aan te gaan. Inmiddels hebben duizend burgemeesters de U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement getekend waarin wordt voorgenomen om ten minste te voldoen aan Kyoto. Van het leiderschap van burgemeesters gaat een sterke impuls voor de bescherming van het klimaat uit," aldus Greg Nickels, burgemeester van Seattle en president van USCM.

The dutch G32 cities gathered in Arnhem on december 3rd of 2009:
Reading the Eurocities Stockholm Appeal on Climate Change of 27 november 2009.
We, the mayors and aldermen of medium size cities in the Netherlands, united in the G32, proclaim hereby our support the Stockholm Appeal on Climate Change and the enclosed appeal of Eurocities. These foresaid documents and appeals were handed over on November 27th of 2009 to the deputy prime minister of Sweden and the US Chargé of affairs as a representative of the Obama administration, regarding the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen (COP15).
The medium sized cities in the Netherlands, united in the G32, deliver a substantial effort to achieve the Dutch national goals on Climate Change and the goals as mentioned in the Stockholm Appeal on Climate Change. Our cities are willing to contribute together with our citizens, our business community and the academia in achieving tangible results and to develop local solutions to our global problems.

THE STOCKHOLM APPEAL
ON CLIMATE CHANGE
We, Mayors of the largest cities in Europe, represented by EUROCITIES, and Mayors of
the United States, represented by the United States Conference of Mayors, send this appeal
to the Heads of State at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009 in
Copenhagen.
Mayors in Europe and the United States recognise the importance of protecting the
environment while achieving economic growth and sustainability of our communities.
All our cities and our citizens need a new world agreement to combat climate change. Such
an agreement must be based on the concept that it is possible to combine economic growth
with strong environmental measures.
It is our firm belief that consideration of the environment is not an obstacle to economic
growth but rather that economic growth is a prerequisite to achieve the goal of sustainable
urbanisation.
Cities are powerful examples of innovative and effective strategies to protect the
environment. Our strength, knowledge, experience and successes at the local level
demonstrate the crucial role of local governments in climate protection.
We appeal to the decision makers meeting in Copenhagen to recognise the great
contributions of local governments to their nations' climate protection efforts.
We believe that cities must help implement the agreement that you as Heads of State sign in
Copenhagen.
Our cities are home to more than half of all citizens and what we do, or do not do, will be
decisive. We are ready to engage our citizens in implementing the agreement that emerges
from the Copenhagen deliberations, and we are also ready to continue to develop local
solutions to our global problems.
Help us meet or beat your targets! Use our experience and knowledge by letting us assist in
the planning. Use your legislative power to give us the authority to fight climate change.
Give us the economic means to take the actions you decide on in the agreement.
With this appeal we refer to EUROCITIES Declaration on Climate Change, the U.S.
Mayors Climate Protection Agreement and the Local Government Climate Roadmap,
expressing the common position of networks of local authorities from all the continents.
Our world, our nations, our cities and our citizens expect you to do your part and for us to
do ours. Together, let us build a more sustainable world!
