De Vrede van Utrecht lezing heeft dit jaar als thema 'De objectiviteit van wetenschap bij waarheidsvinding'. Sinds de 18de eeuw is de wetenschap explosief ontwikkeld. Hoever laten wij ons leiden door de wetenschap en techniek? In deze tijd is het vertrouwen in de wetenschap groot. Men gaat uit van vooruitgang door objectiviteit en zoektocht naar waarheid in de wetenschap. In hoeverre laat de wetenschap zich gebruiken voor manipulatie van de waarheid. Wie bepaalt bijvoorbeeld de parameters voor de wetenschappelijke onderzoeken bij catastrofale ongelukken? Wat is de waarheid?
Professor Peter L. Galison bestudeert hoe opvattingen over wetenschap en objectiviteit zich hebben ontwikkeld sinds de Verlichting. Tijdens deze lezing brengt hij de geschiedenis van het begrip 'waarheid' vanaf de vroege 18de eeuw tot de 20ste eeuw in kaart. Door middel van visualisatie technieken verbindt Galison de wetenschappelijke praktijk met de culturele en artistieke uitingen. De lezing is mede hierdoor toegankelijk voor een breed publiek.
Prof. dr Peter Galison: "Periodically, a massive technical system fails catastrophically, and we as a society struggle to understand why--what combination of human and machine is responsible? When billions of dollars and hundreds of lives are at stake, the resources and stakes are vast for both government and industry. No effort is spared to understand the run up to the breakdown, and nowhere is the result of such inquiries so public as the investigation into the crash of large commercial airliners. In this talk, Prof. Galison aims to examine the very structure of such inquiries, to explore their upshot, the fateful "probable cause" and the powerful technical, sociological, moral, and philosophical pressures on this notion that simultaneously drive us to think, unstably, of accidents as resulting from tiny precipitating events and from ramified, systemic failure." Prof.dr.Peter Galison is de Pellegrino University professor in de Geschiedenis van de Wetenschappen en natuurkunde aan Harvard University.
