The Temptation of St. Tony is een parabel over het nieuwe roofdierkapitalisme in Oost-Europa met zijn genadeloze regels en spelers. In prachtige zwart-zilverbeelden geeft hij zijn sombere maar prikkelende visie, die door de zwarte humor toch ook heel vermakelijk is.
Het uitgangspunt van Veiko Õunpuu's tweede film na het veelgeprezen Autumn Ball is een citaat uit Dantes La divina commedia: 'Halverwege de reis van ons leven, bevond ik mij in een donker bos.' Veertiger Tony, een redelijk welvarende middenkader-manager, begint na de begrafenis van zijn vader te twijfelen aan zijn manier van leven en moraal. Het bos om hem heen begint donker te worden.
Op zijn reis door onbekend gebied naar een zuiverder geweten vinden bizarre gebeurtenissen plaats, en hij raakt zijn greep op de werkelijkheid kwijt. Als Tony een hond probeert te begraven die hij heeft overreden op de modderige binnenwegen van Estland, vindt hij afgehakte handen in het bos. Als hij daarvan aangifte wil doen, begint de politie een onderzoek naar hem. Hij is getuige van de ontrouw van zijn vrouw, ontslaat zijn werknemers en ontmoet een engelachtig Russisch meisje dat al snel ontvoerd wordt. Het lijkt erop dat hij alles verliest wat hem ooit houvast bood: zijn familie, zijn baan en ten slotte zichzelf. (Cat. IFFR)

The Temptation of St. Tony is a film about a man, who has reached middle age, and finds himself in exactly the kind of darkening forest that Dante describes.
An unusual problem intrudes upon his moderately prosperous and quiet life - morality. Is it possible to be a "good person"? What does that mean anyway? And what's in it for you? On his journey towards a clearer conscience but an increasingly complicated reality, Tony meets several typical specimens familiar from contemporary Estonian society and lives through exciting adventures, not without some diverting humour. And it starts to seem that slowly, and quite inevitably, the man loses his job, his family, and finally reality, itself. Compassion incurs capital loss.
