CONFERENCE ON "TRUST IN GOVERNMENT: BUILD - MAINTAIN - IMPROVE"
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) is pleased to welcome you to the conference on "Trust in Government: Build - Maintain - Improve" organised in collaboration with the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG).

The main question to be addressed at the occasion of this conference will be:
How can local and regional politicians in Europe build, maintain and improve the trust their citizens have in their government?
Through this event, CEMR and VNG hope to provide participants, and especially local and regional elected representatives, with a platform for international comparative learning on trends in terms of the confidence and trust citizens have for public administration, democratic institutions and processes.
The conference also constitutes CEMR and VNG's contribution to the European Local Democracy Week (ELDW), an annual European event where international, national and local activities are organised between 11 and 17 October in all member states of the Council of Europe. ELDW is notably a tribute to the European Charter of Local Self-Government which was opened for signature on 15 October 1985 - this year's edition thus marking the Charter's 25th anniversary.

De Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten en de Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), de koepelorganisatie van verenigingen van gemeenten in Europa, willen u van harte uitnodigen voor de internationale conferentie Trust in Government: Build - Maintain - Improve.

De conferentie richt zich op het actuele thema van het vertrouwen dat burgers stellen in hun overheid.
Net als in Nederland staan ook veel burgers in andere Europese landen zeer kritisch of zelfs sceptisch tegen over hun lokale, regionale en nationale gekozen vertegenwoordigers en overheidsinstellingen.
Met dit evenement willen de VNG en CEMR lokale en regionale politici en bestuurders een platform bieden voor een kennisuitwisseling rond dit thema op Europees niveau.
De hoofdvraag van de conferentie is hoe lokale en regionale politici en bestuurders in Europa het vertrouwen van burgers in hun overheid kunnen opbouwen, handhaven en verbeteren.
Om deze vraag te beantwoorden zullen gerenommeerde sprekers uit binnen- en buitenland aanwezig
zijn om hun visie geven. Onder deze sprekers zijn Paul Schnabel, directeur van het Sociaal en
Cultureel Planbureau en Robert Manchin, directeur van Gallup. Gallup voert namens de Europese
Commissie de Eurobarometer uit, waarmee de publieke opinie van Europese burgers rond verschillende thema's in kaart gebracht wordt.
