Met maar liest 11 César nominaties heeft de film DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX van Xavier Beauvois in Frankrijk de meeste nominaties binnengesleept om in aanmerking te komen voor de prestigieuze Franse Filmaward, de César. Vrijdag 25 februari worden de winnaars in de verschillende categorieën bekend gemaakt. Zie bijgaand de volledige lijst met de nominaties.
In Nederland ging DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX op 18 november in première. De film, die lovende kritieken kreeg, is nog steeds te zien in de filmtheaters.
In DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX, die zich afspeelt in de jaren '90 in de Maghrebijnse bergen in Noord-Afrika en gebaseerd is op een waargebeurde geschiedenis, komt de harmonie tussen een aantal Franse monniken en hun Islamitische dorpsgenoten onder druk te staan door het toenemende terreur en geweld. Een diep menselijk verhaal over vriendschap, de toewijding aan eenmaal gemaakte keuzes en de trouw aan idealen; een confrontatie tussen waarden en de ideologie van het fundamentalisme.
Op het Filmfestival van Cannes, waarvoor de film officieel was geselecteerd voor de competitie, werd DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX tot winnaar uitgeroepen van de GRAND PRIX (Prix du Jury Oecuménique - Prix de l'Éducation Nationale). Het was tevens de Franse inzending voor de Oscars. In Frankrijk en België groeide de film uit tot een ongekend succes. Ruim 2 miljoen mensen zagen de film in de Franse bioscoop. Volgens de Franse pers is de film een "maatschappelijk fenomeen". In België trok de film ruim 100.000 bezoekers.
Een film van Xavier Beauvois (scenario en regie / Le Petit Lieutenant, Selon Matt Hieu, N'oublie pas que tu vas mourir) met in de belangrijkste rollen Lambert Wilson (Coeurs, Hiver 54 l'Abbé Pierre, Corps et Biens, Rendez Vous), Michael Lonsdale en Philippe Laudenbach. Een productie van Why Not Productions, Armada Films en France 3 Cinéma. Speelduur: 120 minuten.
Synopsis
Een klooster, ergens hoog in de Maghrebijnse bergen tijdens de jaren '90. Acht Franse monniken leven er in harmonie met hun islamitische dorpsgenoten. Ze helpen hen bij hun werk, nemen deel aan hun festiviteiten en waken over hun medische gezondheid. Terreur en geweld nemen echter langzaam maar zeker de bovenhand in de regio. Wanneer een aantal buitenlandse werknemers door een Islamitisch fundamentalistische groep wordt vermoord, biedt het leger hen bescherming aan, wat ze weigeren. Ondanks het toenemende gevaar dat hen omringt, groeit de vastberadenheid onder de monniken om te blijven. Als ze besluiten om enkele gewonde terroristen te behandelen, reageren de autoriteiten furieus en zetten hen onder druk om terug te keren naar Frankrijk.
De geschiedenis
DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX by Xavier Beauvois is loosely based on the Tibhirine tragedy. It explores the last few months in the life of this small community of Christian monks in a "Muslim land". The film is more interested in capturing the spirit of the events and what was at stake in the community than in recounting the exact details of an historical reality. The story begins several weeks before the terrorists issued an ultimatum ordering all foreigners to leave the country. An armed terrorist group even broke into the monastery on Christmas Eve. The monks' dilemma, dormant until that point, is now clear: stay or leave? The decision must be made as a group. But for them, the choice of going or staying, despite the threats, is laden with consequences. When they refuse military protection, the government asks them to return to France. Each monk will make his decision by assessing the human, political and religious stakes and by plumbing the depths of his soul and conscience. This dramatic tension accompanies the practical and mystical daily life of the community: their deep ties to the villagers and the spirit of peace and charity with which they try to counter the violence eating away at the country.
DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX bears witness to the reality of the monks' commitment and the strength of the message of peace they wish to share by staying among their Muslim brothers: the possibility of a fraternal and spiritual common ground between Christianity and Islam. The monks called the army "the brothers of the plain" and the terrorists "the brothers of the mountain". Far from naïve, they were aware they were walking a fine line between two sides with ambiguous positions. Xavier Beauvois' film adopts the point of view of the monks and the rhythm of life in a Cistercian monastery.
