Stephen Frears, regisseur van films alsDANGEROUS LIAISONS, THE HI-LO COUNTRY en THE QUEEN ontvangt dit jaar de EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD voor zijn buitengewone oeuvre. "I don't know what to say,"zei Frears over de telefoon. "Having already received various awards like the Spanish Goya, the French César and the British BAFTA, well, they're always nice if you get them," en hij voegde er aan toe: "But I'm very grateful, it's very nice to be complimented by Europe." De regisseur keek terug op zijn lange verwantschap met de European Film Academy: "I was there when it was founded, I came flying back from the Oscars to get there."Hij vervolgde met: "Of course, I'm never quite sure whether England is part of Europe. We're divided about this and have complicated feelings. But what matters is to keep European film going! And I'm totally committed to that. Nothing else matters. If the films are good, then people will go and see them."

Stephen Frears is tijdens de 24ste European Film Awards Ceremony op 3 december 2011 in Berlijn eregast. Stephen Frears Met aanvankelijk een carrière bij de Britse televisie, brak Stephen Frears in 1985 door met de film MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDERETTE.De film ontving zowel nominaties voor een Oscar als voor een BAFTA.De samenwerking met scenarioschrijverHanif Kureish zette hij in 1987 voort bij de film SAMMY AND ROSIE GET LAID. Daarna maakte hij de Joe Orton biopic PRICK UP YOUR EARS (1987) en DANGEROUS LIAISONS (1988) die drie Oscars, twee BAFTA's en een Franse César won voor Beste Regie. Andere door hem geregisseerde films zijn THE GRIFTERS (1990), MARY REILLY (1996),THE HI-LO COUNTRY (1998), HIGH FIDELITY (2000), DIRTY PRETTY THINGS (2003), MRS HENDERSON PRESENTS (2005) en TAMARA DREWE (2010). Zijn film THE QUEEN (2006) groeide uit tot een groot internationaal succes, werd genomineerd voor iedere denkbare award en won zowel de Spaanse Goya, een Oscar, een Golden Globe als de European Film Award voor Helen Mirren.
