Sun Poised to Accelerate Storage Market Share Growth Sun StorEdge 9900 Series Provides Greater Performance, Availability, And Scalability With a Lower Cost Architecture Than EMC PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug. 8 -- Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced an agreement with Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Data Systems which changes the competitive landscape for storage and data management in the enterprise.
The two companies are joining forces to attack the high-end datacenter storage opportunity with a series of efforts centered around the new Sun StorEdge 9900(TM) products. These systems are supported by jointly-staffed, global mission-critical support centers, so Sun storage and server customers can be sure of prompt response with a single phone call. The agreement also brings together the comprehensive software efforts of both companies, including industry-leading Sun HighGround(TM) SRM software, and a commitment to collaborate on future software development to meet customer requirements in increasingly complex storage networks.
The new Sun StorEdge 9900 products are powerful systems, based on Hitachi's Lightning 9900 family, that deliver extreme levels of availability and performance with support for heterogeneous open systems and mainframe environments. These products extend Sun's storage strategy for scalable, easily managed open storage networks to encompass glass house environments. By doing this, Sun is now delivering high-end customers a new level of choice, control and affordability.
Sun's strengthening of its overall storage product portfolio, including the flagship Sun StorEdge T3(TM) array, demonstrates a relentless focus on becoming an industry leader in the storage marketplace. A number of recent acquisitions, including HighGround Systems and LSC, have further bolstered Sun's position in this space.
"We've pulled together all the right pieces to liberate customers from the expensive lock-in that our competitors enforce," said Mark Canepa, executive vice president of Sun Network Storage. "Sun's investment in building customer choice, control and affordability is paying dividends -- stay tuned for more milestones in the coming quarters."
"This is a significant addition to Sun's StorEdge family of solutions," said John McArthur, vice president of storage research at IDC. "Customers now have an expanded range of options that include Sun-supplied and Sun-supported total server/storage solutions for mission-critical environments." The Sun StorEdge 9900 series includes software and services that are not available from any other source. The systems are optimized for the Solaris(TM) Operating Environment, certified for high availability with Sun Cluster 3.0, and part of Sun's ongoing integration certification and performance program.
The comprehensive offerings underscore the value of Sun's complete systems approach to meeting customers needs. Sun StorEdge 9900 series is faster, more available, more scalable, with a lower cost architecture than EMC. Sun's product carries up to five times the bandwidth of an EMC Symmetrix box and a newer switched architecture for greater performance, scalability, and availability.
"Providing a comprehensive, end-to-end solution to all of our customers is the key to our success," said Bobby Patrick, vice president of strategy and business development, Digex (Nasdaq: DIGX). "Working with Sun since the dawn of the hosting industry and as the first SunTone certified partner worldwide, Digex has been able to provide industry leading hosting solutions built on Sun's high-end, scalable server offerings and existing Sun StorEdge T3 storage products. Now, we are excited about assessing the new Sun StorEdge 9900 series to provide the next generation of high-end storage services to businesses worldwide for years to come."
