Geachte redactie,

Ernst & Young

On 1 May 2004, 10 countries will join the European Union (EU), increasing its size from 15 to 25 member states, and bringing with them new sets of tax legislation and rulings. On 2 May 2004, tax departments must be ready to move forward to conduct business smoothly. Customs and international trade questions are among the issues raised by EU enlargement, including whether current customs relief procedures are appropriate. Companies in EU countries bordering accession states will face significant tax differences in markets only a few miles away; and companies operating in member states will need to understand how the changes will affect the way they trade in the new Europe. In addition, there will be important legal and human resources implications, including changes in labor and commercial agreements, and opportunities to obtain subsidies for investing in accession countries.

These and other issues regarding the effects of enlargement on companies doing business in the EU will be addressed at an upcoming Thought Center Webcast, to be held on 10 February at 15:00 GMT (16:00 CET). The panel will focus on issues that companies need to address to be ready to conduct business on and after 1 May 2004. As of 10 February, there will be less than 3 months left until EU enlargement is complete. Please join us as we discuss the issues raised by the enlargement, so that you can prepare for doing business in an expanded EU.
