PRESS RELEASE

Tour of buildings at University Centre De Uithof

Friday 7 September - 15h:00

Educational buildings have been built in De Uithof since the 1960's. The first building rush took place in the 1970's and was followed by a long period of time in which there was no building activity.

However, in the last 10 years, much has been built with enthusiasm and as a result De Uithof has more and more gotten the look of a real campus. The new building impulse resulted in a number of very extraordinary buildings and the architecture in De Uithof is highly appreciated: The Basket Bar has won the NAi award for young architects and the Rietveld Prize 2003; the university library has been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Prize en for the Rietveld Prize 2005 and earlier the Educatorium has won several awards.

During the tour some of these leading, modern buildings are visited: The red Minnaert building with a water basin for rain water in the main hall; the award winning Educatorium by the Office of Metropolitan Architecture and the new university library by Wiel Arets Associates; a striking black glass box - very light and airy for a library - with a mostly black interior with bright red leather information desks and all sorts of design gadgets: viewing it is more than worth the trouble.

The tour also goes to the NMR building by UN Studio (the designers of the Prince Claus bridge), de student housing by Rudy Uytenhaak and to the glossy Basket Bar to look at the cow skin covered bar, the blue Basketball field on the roof and the orange skate loop in front of the entrance. After the tour it is possible to have a drink there.
