De vertoning van de VPRO Tiger Awards Competitie in New York, een initiatief van het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) en de Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), heeft veel indruk gemaakt. De New York Times omschreef 'Rotterdam @ Bam' als een 'groundbreaking collaboration between a respected European film festival and an American institution.' Time Out New York meldde: 'For nearly 40 years, the IFFR has been the place to go to go for genuine alternatives to the Hollywood-sanctioned studio movies and auteurist-driven foreign films that often dominate other European fests.' Van 3 tot en met 9 maart werden in de BAMCinématek in New York alle films uit de VPRO Tiger Awards Competitie 2010 vertoond, inclusief een programma met korte films uit de Tiger Awards Competitie voor Korte Films. Bijna alle filmmakers waren aanwezig bij de vertoning van hun film.
Na 'Rotterdam @ BAM' reizen meer films die tijdens IFFR 2010 hun wereldpremière kregen, de komende maanden de wereld over. De complete serie van dertien opdrachtfilms uit het 'Forget Africa'-programma gaat naar het festival voor Afrikaanse, Latijns-Amerikaanse en Aziatische films in Milaan. Hunting & Zn van Sander Burger (met Maria Kraakman en Dragan Bakema) is geselecteerd voor het gerenommeerde Newyorkse festival New Directors, New Films van het MoMA en de Film Society van het Lincoln Centre. Simon Rumley's intense wraakfilm Red White & Blue (met Amanda Fuller en Noah Taylor) is opgenomen in het invloedrijke festival South by South-West (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.
In Nederland programmeert Smart Project Space in april en mei via eigen import de festivalfilms The Sentimental Engine Slayer, debuut van muzikaal fenomeen Omar Rodriguez Lopez (bekend van The Mars Volta), Street Days, de opmerkelijke Georgische competitiefilm van Levan Koguashvili en, nog onder voorbehoud, The Temptation of St. Tony, de zwartgallig-komische competitiefilm van Veiko Õunpuu uit Estland.
Het verbreden van de horizon van (competitie)films is een vaste doelstelling van het IFFR: waar mogelijk ondersteunen het festival, het Hubert Bals Fonds en de CineMart zowel beginnende makers als meer ervaren regisseurs in de diverse stadia van hun filmprojecten. Het festival trekt allereerst een groot Nederlands publiek naar een combinatie van veel nog onbekend kunstzinnig werk en een relatief klein aantal mainstream arthousefilms; internationaal staat het festival in hoog aanzien als premièreplek voor zowel lange als korte films vanwaaruit collegafestivals, verkoopagenten, televisie-aankopers en filmdistributeurs hun favoriete projecten en films meenemen.
