JIT will present first results MH17 after the summer

After this summer, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) will present the first results of the criminal investigation into the crash of flight MH17. It concerns the weapon which was used to shoot down the aircraft and the exact launch site of the weapon.

Earlier this year, the JIT announced that before the second half of this year they expected to be able to conclude that part of the investigation that concerns the weapon which was used to shoot down flight MH17 and the exact launch site of the weapon. This investigation is at a very advanced
stage, but a few issues take more time than expected.

Requests for legal assistance

In particular, these issues concern some points in the analysis of the forensic investigation and information which has been requested through several requests for legal assistance. The JIT is still waiting for information from the Russian Federation about BUK installations. Meanwhile, the
Public Prosecution Service (PPS) has informed the countries involved that they expect an answer within two months, to be able to include that information in the forensic investigation on time

Contrary to what has been suggested in some articles in the media, the JIT will not publish a report after the summer. As explained previously in a meeting with the relatives, the JIT will eventually include the investigation results in a criminal file, which is intended for the hearing of the
case in a court or a tribunal. This is the usual procedure in a criminal investigation.

Magazine

In anticipation of the presentation after the summer, today the relatives receive a digital magazine with information about the way in which the criminal investigation is conducted. After the weekend, this magazine will be made available to the public on the website of the PPS.

The JIT consists of PPS and Police of the Netherlands, Australia, Malaysia, Belgium and Ukraine. These countries work together in the criminal investigation, that is aimed at tracking down the persons who are responsible for the crash of MH17 and bringing them to justice.
