European directives stipulate that smart meters must be installed in homes in the Netherlands. According to the experts, these smart meters can help to create a sustainable and reliable energy supply. The bill submitted to the House of Representatives and then to the Senate in the Netherlands, has been held in the Senate. The Senate has doubts with regard to privacy and the mandatory nature of the legislation, combined with the related sanctions.
The Minister for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation has undertaken to submit an alteration (novelle) to the legislative amendment. The minister also indicated that a ‘letter of reassurance’ from TNO would be included with the legislative proposal. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation then asked TNO to give an opinion on the implementation regulations.
